CAEN

Updated 2007/03/06 - CAEN has provided email hosting services to College of Engineering students, faculty, and staff since the late 1980s. For much of that time, the email hosting capabilities provided by CAEN were greater than those available elsewhere on campus, and supporting an email system for the College of Engineering was easily justified. In recent years, a combination of changing email usage patterns by students, an increase in the capacity of ITCS’s campus-wide email system, a significant increase in the level of effort and cost required to provide a competitive email hosting service, and increasing demands for CAEN in other areas have all combined to lead CAEN to make the decision to end the email hosting services it currently provides for the College of Engineering.

We have carefully considered this decision, and we know it will cause some hardships for the Engineering user community. We feel it's a decision that will ultimately benefit the College in terms of gaining opportunity in other emerging areas of information technology.

CAEN will be discontinuing all email hosting services for traditional (IMAP/POP) mailboxes currently hosted at mail.engin.umich.edu on May 1, 2007. Services have already been disabled for users with mailboxes that are empty and have not been accessed since May 1, 2006. Email sent to addresses ending in @engin.umich.edu will continue to be delivered to the corresponding @umich.edu address for all College of Engineering students, faculty, and staff.
