CAEN Adds Proxy Server Feature to Email Service
On September 15th, CAEN will add new functionality to its traditional (non-Exchange) email environment by deploying a proxy server for IMAP and POP. This new proxy server will accept all IMAP and POP connections and re-direct them to any of several servers where email is actually stored. This will allow CAEN to add to and reconfigure the email server environment with less service downtime than was previously required.
Anyone using CAEN's traditional IMAP or POP service will need to change a configuration setting in their email client in order to take advantage of this new functionality. The incoming (IMAP/POP) email server name for most people using CAEN's traditional IMAP or POP service was srvr5.engin.umich.edu, and should be changed to mail.engin.umich.edu. CAEN strongly encourages everyone to make this change in order to take advantage of the higher availability this service provides. No changes will be required for the outgoing (SMTP) email server setting.
This change is only for those using CAEN's traditional email service. This does not apply to those using either Exchange or the ITCS IMAP and POP email servers.
The CAEN email proxy server will not support Kerberos authentication, but will support email session encryption with SSL and TLS for both IMAP and POP. Anyone previously using a Kerberized email client may notice a change in how or when their email client prompts for a password.
It is very important that everyone uses either SSL or TLS when checking email in order to secure their passwords and their email content. For more information on SSL and TLS, refer to the SSL FAQ on the CAEN web site at www.engin.umich.edu/caen/faqs/Email/General/ssl/.
