Daylight Savings Time changes affect U-M Exchange services
Daylight Savings Time (DST) will start 3 weeks earlier and end 1 week later beginning this year. The standard period for DST would have been April 1 through October 28, but this year it will be March 11 through November 3. This could cause problems with U-M Exchange calendars, so CAEN urges all Exchange users to read this entire article detailing the steps needed to address this change.
This change will require updates to be installed on your computer, since it is currently configured to change to DST on April 1. Likewise, Outlook appointments and meetings will be affected by this change to the DST window. Before this happens, you will want to be certain that you document your Outlook appointments so that you can verify that they have been adjusted properly after the updates are applied. There are some tasks you can do to assure your appointments remain at the correct times:
- Change the Subject: line of each appointment to include the beginning and end time between 3/11/07 and 4/1/07, as well as those between 10/28/07 and 11/3/07.
- For later reference, print your appointments between 3/11/07 and 4/1/07, as well as those between 10/28/07 and 11/3/07.
- If you do not have any appointments yet during these time periods, do not add any meetings or appointments until after the updates have been applied.
Instructions on changing the subject line and printing your calendar are available at http://www.bus.umich.edu/Technology/News/DST/instructions.htm. Ask your computer support person to verify whether or not these patch have been applied:
- Windows XP users will need to install the XP DST patch (KB931836) by no later than Friday, February 16.
- Macintosh users make sure you are running Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later and Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.3.
Between February 16 and 18, a tool will be run on the U-M Exchange servers that will change meeting times between March 11 and April 1 to reflect the new start of Daylight Savings Time. This will cause many notifications of changed meeting times to be generated. It is possible that some meeting times will be incorrectly modified. This is why we recommend entering the meeting times in the subject or text fields, and having printed copies of your calendar(s).
On Monday, February 19 (or soon after), you should accept all changed meeting time notifications and check the meeting times for the meetings scheduled between March 11 and April 1. Correct any which are wrong based on the time that you wrote in earlier.
