Deployment of COE Standard Windows Installations Growing
More faculty and staff around the College are now utilizing the CAEN Operating Environment (COE) on their desktop PCs.
CAEN developed the COE in order to provide a safer and more secure operating system that is consistent with the College environment. The COE is available at no additional charge for departments whose computing staff have been trained by CAEN to install the operating system.
Based on up-to-date technology and services that CAEN has developed for its lab environment, the COE includes the same security and anti-virus software that have been applied by CAEN in its labs at the time of installation. A COE installation also includes selected campus site-licensed software.
PCs running the CAEN Operating Environment can also easily take advantage of home and group directories located on CAEN's new network-attached storage server (NAS), storage.engin.umich.edu.
Over the past year, CAEN has been working very closely with several departments in order to increase the usability of the COE within the College. With the increased incident of virus and security threats, support staff have found it increasingly more difficult to restore infected machines. With the COE, departmental support staff can easily reinstall a machine and get it back up and running within a half hour. CAEN also encourages the utilization of the COE Update Subscription service, so as not to burden staff with the task of installing operating system and software patches, updating anti-virus tools, or updating user/group access lists. Updates are issued in a timely manner through an automated network synchronization process.
For additional information about the COE and add-on subscription services, refer to the departmental section of the CAEN web site at www.engin.umich.edu/caen/departmental, or contact the CAEN Hotline at 764-CAEN.
