Service Center to stop accepting Apple hardware from outside the CoE

The CAEN Service Center no longer accepts Apple hardware for repair from outside the College of Engineering starting May 30, 2008. The size of the campus-wide repair service had grown to a point where it was no longer sustainable by a department that is not part of a central unit. In addition, ITCS opened an Apple repair center in the Michigan Union, and we feel this is the appropriate place for that business to exist. The Apple store in Briarwood is yet another local repair option.

CAEN still offers Apple repair services to faculty and staff in the College of Engineering, although the level of service is different. CAEN no longer accepts personally-owned computers for repair. In addition, only University shortcodes are accepted as payment for out-of-warranty repairs.

CAEN needs to apply more effort in assisting and supporting faculty and others who use the technology in classrooms and lecture halls, and in maintaining and supporting that equipment. The use of these facilities, notably with lecture recording, is rapidly increasing and more resources are required to support this growth. The use of CAEN computer labs is also increasing and presents the need for additional operational support in those locations. Curtailing the Apple repair volume will allow us to reallocate staff resources into these areas.

The CAEN Service Center will remain available as a convenience for College of Engineering departments. However, the support of classrooms and other operational support will be a higher priority than doing repairs. We will continue to evaluate the Apple repair service and update you regarding its future.
