CoE Personal Webserving to be Discontinued
In Fall 2006, CAEN will no longer be hosting personal web sites for College of Engineering students, staff, and faculty on www-personal. engin.umich.edu. Personal web sites for all members of the U-M community are already available at www-personal.umich.edu. These sites are backed by a generous amount of file space, and can use a number of scripts and web site tools provided by the University.
By encouraging Engineering students and staff to take advantage of centrally provided services, the College hopes to focus its information technology resources on projects that are more directly related to the CoE mission.
U-M personal web sites are stored in individual U-M IFS home directories, which provide up to 1GB of space for web pages and other files. In addition, scripts such as HTMaiL, Survey, and Guestbook are also available for U-M personal web sites. Finally, services like server-side-includes, usage statistics, private web space, and web-based file management for U-M AFS can make personal web site more dynamic and easier to manage.
If you do not yet have a personal web site at www-personal.engin.umich.edu, you should not create one, as the service will end after Summer 2006. Visit www.umich.edu/~umweb/how-to/ for instructions on how to create your web site on the U-M personal web server.
If you already have a personal web site at Engineering, you are strongly encouraged to migrate to the U-M personal web server before Fall 2006. As long as you have an Engineering AFS home directory, your files will still be available to you, but they will no longer be accessible on the web after that time.
In Fall 2006, people visiting URLs beginning with www-personal.engin.umich.edu will be redirected to the corresponding www-personal.umich.edu/~uniqname URL. It is important that you migrate your site before Fall 2006 so that visitors will not experience any disruption in service. CAEN will continue to evaluate the situation to determine when URL forwarding is minimal and no longer necessary.
If the contents of your personal web site are focused on research, teaching, or departmental matters, this is a good time for you to discuss the future of your web materials with your department, departmental computing support, and the CoE IT web team. Some sites on the Engineering personal web server might be better served from a more official location, and CoE IT will help to find new homes for such sites before Fall 2006.
More information and details about the end of CoE personal web sites will be communicated throughout the coming year via email and on the CAEN web site at www.engin.umich.edu/ caen/. CAEN Alumni account holders will be notified of any changes in their web hosting service. Any member of the Engineering community with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact CoE IT staff by emailing webmaster@engin.umich.edu so we can work together for a smooth transition next summer.
