Computing Clusters upgraded
The Center for Advanced Computing at CAEN is in the process of upgrading the software on its two Linux clusters to Red Hat Linux 4. After the move to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, the environment on the cluster nodes will be similar to that of the Linux hosts in the CAEN labs.
In conjunction with the operating system upgrade, other beneficial changes are being planned. AFS will be installed on the head node as well as the compute nodes, so you will be able to store your data in a secure location before and after your jobs run. Remember, however, the disk space on the clusters is temporary and intended only for use while your job is actually running.
The installation of AFS will also allow for a sub-set of the CAEN engineering software library to be offered on the clusters. Watch the CAC web site at cac.engin. umich.edu for news about the availability of software packages. Upgraded compilers are also being offered as the default.
The operating system upgrade will support the latest hardware as well. Several nodes with dual-core CPUs (both in single-socket and dual-socket configurations) will be made available as part of the general pool for dedicated testing and benchmarking. These nodes have AMD Opteron 175 (single-socket, dual-core) and AMD Opteron 275 (dual-socket, dual-core) CPUs installed. The nodes with AMD Opteron 275 CPUs present themselves to the operating system as having four CPUs. Therefore, if you typically run small-scale parallel jobs these nodes may be ideal for your code.
The Tivoli Storage Manager system, previously used for both backups and hierarchical storage management, will soon be retired. The hardware and software supporting this system is too old to maintain in a reliable production manner. As a replacement, a large shared storage system with a total capacity of about 6TB will be made available to all of the clusters.
For more information about the operating system upgrade, new hardware, and updates on storage, keep an eye (or an RSS reader) on the CAC web site at cac.engin.umich.edu.
