Releases Quick Access
Run CAEN Windows applications from your wireless laptop
The roll-out of secure wireless networking in the Media Union makes it easier than ever for laptop users to connect to CAEN's Windows terminal servers. The new wireless network provides a secure infrastructure to access terminal server applications from almost anywhere in the Media Union.
In a terminal server environment, applications are installed and executed centrally on the server. Client computers receive screen updates from the server. This allows computers to with a thinclient application to access and run applications that are installed centrally on the server. Because the only data that needs to transfer over the network includes screen updates and keyboard mouse input, the technology is well-suited to low-bandwidth environments.
Anyone with a CAEN account in the ENGIN domain can access the terminal servers with their home, mobile, or office computer. The CAEN terminal server name is caen-ntts.engin. umich.edu. In order to use the service, the Remote Desktop Connection client software must to be installed on a Windows PC. The Windows client can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp.
Computers with the Windows XP operating system already have the Remote Desktop Connection client installed. It can be accessed in the Accessories -> Communications Tools program group. The AFS home directory automatically mounts as the H: drive on the CAEN terminal servers and work can be stored in AFS directories. UNIX, Linux and Mac OS users may use the open source program, rdesktop, to connect to the terminal server environment.
