Changes to the engin.umich.edu AFS environment
Students, faculty and staff at the College of Engineering have been using CAEN AFS to store and access their files online for years. However, beginning in 2006, CAEN no longer issues home directories in the engin.umich.edu AFS cell. Instead, all new CAEN computing accounts will use ITCS IFS (umich.edu) home directories by default on CAEN computers, taking advantage of the larger 10 GB quota (see http://www.itcs.umich.edu/news/2008winter/01092008IFS.html).
By changing the default home directory, newer CAEN account holders will notice some differences in how they log into CAEN Linux computers, compared to those whose home directories are in the engin.umich.edu cell:
- Those who have a CAEN home directory in /afs/engin.umich.edu/u/, with a 200 MB quota, will use their CAEN (ENGIN.UMICH.EDU) Kerberos password to log into Linux computers.
- Those who have an ITCS home directory in /afs/umich.edu/user/, with a 10 GB quota, will use their ITCS (UMICH.EDU) Kerberos password to log into Linux computers.
Switching your default home directory
In order to facilitate the transition to ITCS IFS home directories, anyone whose default home directory is in /afs/engin.umich.edu/u/ and wishes to take advantage of the larger ITCS quota, may request that their default home directory be automatically switched to ITCS IFS. Switching your home directory to the ITCS umich.edu cell will not immediately remove your engin.umich.edu home directory, and you will still have access to files in the engin.umich.edu cell (like other user & group directories, shared departmental & research space, etc.). Once you are ready to switch your default home directory to ITCS IFS, or if you have any questions regarding this change, please send email to caen@umich.edu.
Note To Pine Users: If you use Pine to access your email, you should note that switching your home directory will change the way Pine behaves, since you will be using the ~/.pinerc configuration file located in your ITCS home directory. Also, if you have any Pine folders stored in your CAEN AFS home directory (in ~/mail), they will not automatically be accessible, and will need to be copied to the ~/mail folder in your ITCS home directory.
