CAEN Increases Supplement to ITCS Printing

This year, during Fall and Winter semesters, CAEN added 300 pages to the 400 page quota that College of Engineering students receive for printing in computing sites that use ITCS-provided printing. These sites include the Duderstadt Center, Shapiro Library, Residence Halls, as well as other locations on campus.

Not all students used their additional 300 page allocation this year, resulting in a surplus of unused funds. As a result, for Winter term, CAEN increased this extra allocation per student from 300 to 500 pages, effective April 4, 2005. In addition, students who had already gone over the previous quota for Winter term and had their student accounts charged by ITCS, were recently issued a credit from CAEN to their student accounts for the difference up to the new quota amount. Those that received a credit were notified by an individual email from CAEN.

The additional printing allocation that Engineering students receive is not free. This extra quota is covered by real dollars that CAEN pays to ITCS. The additional print quota is established based on CAEN's forecast of overall usage trends, along with a goal of allocating the funds for extra pages in a fair manner. The quota system is neither flexible nor easy enough to manage to reflect realtime printing usage. Instead, CAEN evaluates usage data on a month-by-month basis. CAEN found that funds are available at this point in the semester to reallocate for additional printing.
