Wireless Networks at U-M

The CAEN Wireless network offers a secure wireless computing experience to every student, faculty, and staff member of the University of Michigan. In addition to offering secure web-based authentication for access to the Internet, CAEN Wireless offers a Virtual Private Network (VPN) which can provide a completely encrypted wireless connection.

Other wireless networks have also been deployed in locations around the University of Michigan (U-M). ITCom (Information Technology Communications) has set up wireless in several locations on Central Campus. CAEN has worked with ITCom to ensure that U-M users have a similar wireless computing experience across both networks. For example:

  • CAEN Wireless uses the same Bluesocket web-based authentication system as ITCom, requiring just a U-M uniqname and Kerberos password to log in.
  • The Cisco VPN client can be used to log in over ITCom's wireless network, using the same VPN profile as CAEN Wireless, so U-M users can take advantage of the same encryption mechanism on both Central Campus and North Campus.

These combined methods of authentication provide wireless users with a uniform wireless experience across U-M. For more information on ITCom's Central Campus wireless network, visit their web page:

Note: There are likely other wireless deployments that exist at U-M; many are privately installed in offices to provide access for the people in those areas. CAEN recommends that you be aware of these networks, and not use any network unless you are sure of the identity of its provider.
