Security Camera Policy

The purpose of the security cameras located in CAEN computing labs and data centers is to provide a mechanism to record activity in areas that have a potential for theft, vandalism, facilities misuse, or Conditions of Use violations.  The purpose of security cameras in College of Engineering (COE) classrooms is to provide a live image of the classroom’s instruction equipment for troubleshooting by CAEN helpdesk staff when requested to do so by the instructor using the room.  COE classroom security cameras will have an operating light which will be on during camera operation.

Both CAEN computing lab and COE classroom security cameras will be limited to uses that do not violate the reasonable expectation of privacy as defined by law and University policy.  In CAEN computing labs there will be signs posted that indicate security cameras are in use.  Images from CAEN lab and data center cameras may be recorded, whereas images from classroom security cameras are not.  The retention of any recorded images will typically be 7 days or fewer unless images are required for a specific investigation.

All recorded images from CAEN computing labs are securely stored on CAEN servers and access to recorded or live camera images is limited to select CAEN staff.  These select CAEN staff will receive a copy of this policy and must provide acknowledgment that they have read and understand its contents.  Recorded images will not be routinely checked and will only be reviewed in the event that the University has a business need to review the recorded images.  A business need includes the investigation of theft, vandalism, violation of University policy, state, or federal law.  Reviews must also have the prior approval of the staff member’s manager and the Director of CAEN or his/her designee.  Unless required by law, the Director of CAEN or his/her designee, in consultation with U-M Office of the General Counsel, will decide if a review request originating outside of CAEN will be honored and with whom the review information can be shared with.

Notes:

  • This policy does not apply to cameras deployed for recording lectures.
