Student Positions
The starting pay rate for students working at CAEN is a minimum of $8.25 -$10.00 per hour. The actual rate depends upon your experience and qualifications. Students are also eligible for raises once they demonstrate their abilitites. Some of the student positions available include:
- Hotline Consultants - Work at the CAEN Hotline assisting U-M computer and network users with questions about CAEN services, computing accounts, computer access and usage, and related software. Diagnose and correct routine systems problems. Desired Qualifications: Strong computer experience; excellent communication and customer service skills; and an ability to troubleshoot computer related problems. Examples include:
- Help the community with accessing CAEN computers, the network, & software
- Answer basic questions about Windows, Linux, and Mac OS
- Assist with printing problems in CAEN computer labs and classrooms
- Troubleshoot with file storage and server questions
- Set up personal laptops with wireless and Ethernet connectivity
- Engin Admin Desktop Support- This position provides front-line computer support for the Engineering Administration. We support PCs, Macs, printers, and other office equipment. Duties include assisting users by answering telephones, performing triage on hardware failures, performing basic printer maintenance, installing & deploying new computer hardware, setup A/V equipment for meeting presentations, maintain printer toner inventory, monitor email and voicemail messages, and perform other related duties as needed. Educational value of this job: Improve customer service skills, communication skills, organizational skills, team work skills, computer skills and knowledge of computer networks. Desired Qualifications: Good written and verbal communication skills, knowledge of Windows software and basic hardware maintenance.
- Office Assistants - Assist CAEN staff in its general office operations. Perform receptionist duties such as directing telephone calls and assisting users with general questions about CAEN. Write receipts, assist with filing, copying, and data entry; update and maintain files; organize mail; messenger deliveries. Assist with special projects that may include the use of automation software and simple database programs such as Filemaker Pro; development of macros (VBA) for Microsoft Office. Desired Qualifications: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with good oral communication skills.
- Backup Operator - Assist in machine room and work with the latest backup software while performing server backup and restore requests. Desired Qualifications: Strong computer experience; an ability to solve computer-related problems. Previous experience with repairing computer equipment.
- Lab Inspectors - Support the delivery of selected IT services and resources in the CAEN labs. Responsibilities include: stock and deliver supplies; clean labs and equipment; troubleshoot; support & install computers and printers; provide end user assistance; develop support tools and processes. Desired Qualifications; Strong and diverse computer experience; excellent communication skills; ability to solve technology-related problems; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, communicative, outgoing, and dependable.
- Classroom Technology Maintenance - Support instructional technology services and equipment in the CoE classrooms. Responsibilities include: troubleshoot problems with equipment including projectors and A/V technology; provide end user assistance; develop support tools and processes. Desired Qualifications; Strong and diverse computer experience; excellent communication skills; ability to solve technology-related problems; ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, communicative, outgoing, and dependable.
- Hardware Technicians - Troubleshoot and repair Apple & PC computers, and printers. Diagnose software problems, and perform preventive maintenance.Desired Qualifications: Strong computer experience; excellent communication skills; and an ability to solve computer-related problems. Previous experience with repairing computer equipment.
- Network Technicians - Technicians assist in installation and configuration of network switches and access points. They also install Ethernet cables for new connections, troubleshoot network problems, monitor network status, and update network documentation. Desired Qualifications: Strong computer experience, excellent communication skills, and an ability to solve computer-related problems.
- System Administrators - Assist with the development of computer programs and scripts for use in the CAEN environment and/or the Web. Develop technical documentation for software development and usage. Develop/test/modify software for installation on CAEN workstations. Test software and hardware configurations and assist in the definition of problems and conversion of programs for various platforms. Desires Qualifications: Strong computer experience; excellent communication skills. Skills in computer programming, preferable C/C++, Perl, Java, HTML, XML and/or SQL. Experience in either or both, Windows or Linux system administration
- Systems Engineers - Assist with data center infrastructure tasks in the CAEN environment. Test software and hardware configurations for server platforms. Perform validation and performance testing on servers and storage subsystems. Update asset management and tracking systems. Document testing and installation procedures. Desired Qualifications: Strong computer experience; excellent communication skills. Skills in computer programming, preferable: Perl, Java, VBScript, .NET. Experience in both Windows and Linux system administration.
- Database Developers - Assist with the development of database applications (primarily Oracle) for use by College administrative staff. Database support students create and maintain software that access CAEN's Oracle database from a web environment. Students will be trained to use Oracle Forms, Reports, SQL, PL/SQL & Java. Desired Qualifications: Some familiarity with an object-oriented programming language, relational databases, SQL, or Oracle development tools is preferred. Excellent communication skills; and an ability to work in a team environment..
- Web Developers - Assist in the development and maintenance of the Engineering web infrastructure and content. Desired Qualifications: A demonstrated ability to develop clean, well-constructed HTML code; the ability to work independently and in a team environment; and communicate effectively. Previous experience with web-database interactions, SQL, and/or scripting languages; experience with digital graphics (i.e. Photoshop).
- Camp CAEN Counselors/Instructors/Assistants - Counselors assist with instruction and supervision during the several Camp CAEN sessions spring and summer terms. Applicants should have computer experience in C/C++ or Java programming, MCAD, or Web Development, and enjoy working with Middle and High school age students.
