What is DHCP?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client-server networking protocol that allows a computer (or client) anywhere on the CAEN network to gain access to the Internet by automatically obtaining an IP address from a server. DHCP is used by both CAEN public lab machines, as well as individual desktop computers and laptops on departmental networks and in the Duderstadt Center.

How do I get my notebook computer registered to work with CAEN's wired Ethernet?
In order to have your computer registered for DHCP to use CAEN Ethernet on North Campus, you can visit the following link:
Once you authenticate with your uniqname and UMICH.EDU password, enter the MAC (a.k.a. Hardware) address of your Ethernet adapter. The hardware address is a twelve-digit, hexadecimal number (e.g. 00:00:ab:cd:ef:45).
If you have any problems or questions, please Contact CAEN and a CAEN consultant can help get you connected.
How can I get a host name/IP address for my desktop workstation on the CAEN Network?
If you require a static IP address (i.e. host name) for a computer, simply fill out the CAEN Name Service Request IP Address Form. For dynamically allocated IP addresses, simply visit our online dynamic DHCP form to register your computer's hardware address.
Note: A computer network installation with a CAEN Operating Environment (COE) is also available, for a fee. This service includes unpacking and setting up the computer in a departmental environment, connecting the machine to the CAEN network (including most cables and transceivers where required), and providing a static IP address. In addition it includes a CAEN software installation, instead of just the vendor-supplied operating system, with all of the software found on any CAEN lab computer; plus the same security, anti-virus patches and updates that have been applied by CAEN in its labs.
