  • What are all these network drives listed under 'My Computer'?
  • What do I do if my CD gets stuck in a PC's disk drive?
  • How do I burn my files to a CD-R on a CAEN PC?
  • How long are files available when stored locally on CAEN workstations?

What are all these network drives listed under 'My Computer'?

CAEN Windows computers will automatically connect to several file storage locations (personal & administrative) and mount them as network drives under My Computer. These drives include:

    • H: - ITCS IFS Personal Home Directory (e.g. /afs/umich.edu/user/u/n/uniqname)
    • J: - CAEN NAS Course Directories (e.g. \\caen-course.engin.umich.edu)
    • K: - ITCS IFS Course Directories (e.g. /afs/umich.edu/class)
    • N: - CAEN NAS Personal Space (e.g. \\storage.engin.umich.edu\home)
    • R: - CAEN & ITCS AFS Root Directories (e.g. /afs/umich.edu & /afs/engin.umich.edu)

The network drives will appear under My Computer, as shown below:

What do I do if my CD gets stuck in a PC's disk drive?

You have a few options when trying to remove a disk that is stuck in a computer's drive:

  1. Most PC disk drives have a tiny hole located on or near the drive opening. This is where the manual eject mechanism is stored. You can simply stick a straightened paper clip through the hole and push in until the disk pops out.
  2. Try pressing the eject button of the drive while rebooting the machine.
  3. Open the My Computer icon and right-click on the drive icon in which the disk is stuck and select Eject.
  4. If neither of the two previous suggestions work, come to the CAEN Hotline and one of our consultants report your problem.

How do I burn my files to a CD-R on a CAEN PC?

One of the great features of Windows is its ability to burn files to CD-RW without any outside, third-party client software. If you have a group of files that you want burned to CD-RW, you can simply insert a blank CD into the PC's disk drive, then copy (drag-and-drop) the files to the drive's icon under My Computer:

If you want to burn a music CD, you can use Windows Media Player, which is built into Windows. You must first import the files into W.M.P. to convert them to *.wav format. Then, select the Burn option on the top panel:

For more information and tutorials on burning music CDs with Windows Media Player, see the Help in Windows Media Player, or visit Microsoft's Windows Media Player support page.

How long are files available when stored locally on CAEN workstations?

  • In Windows, all files and directories stored in either C:\Documents & Settings or C:\Temp are removed if older than 3 days.
  • In Linux, all files and directories stored in /tmp are removed if older than 3 days. This is also true for the login server.

Note: Files stored locally on CAEN workstations are NOT backed up in any way. It is strongly recommend that if you have important files which will be needed in the future, you store them in your ITCS AFS and/or CAEN NAS space.
