Overview of Email at U-M

ITCS offers electronic mail (email) services to all College of Engineering (CoE) students, faculty and staff. The primary email service is a traditional IMAP/POP email account on the main U-M email server, mail.umich.edu. The service provides a generous amount of storage space, and web-based access from anywhere via http://mail.umich.edu/. When using an email client program, mail.umich.edu requires Secure Socket Layer (SSL) over both Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and Post Office Protocol (POP) to access email. SSL provides a secure way of transmitting passwords and data over the network. Note: IMAP is strongly recommended if you ever check your email on different computers, or if you wish to keep any messages on the server.

Information and documentation on ITCS's traditional email hosting services, including instructions for configuring several common email programs, can be found at:

The email address for every member of the U-M community is uniqname@umich.edu. Those who are specifically part of the CoE also receive a uniqname@engin.umich.edu email address, which is automatically forwarded to uniqname@umich.edu.

U-M Exchange Server

CoE faculty and staff also have the option of obtaining an account on the U-M Exchange server, exchange.umich.edu. Exchange provides email, calendaring & scheduling, online forms, and the tools for custom collaboration. For information about Exchange email, please refer to our Exchange Accounts web page.
