COE for Linux
The CAEN Operating Environment (COE) for Linux includes select licensed software provided by the hardware vendor, as well as selected software licensed for campus-wide use that can be run on privately-owned, departmental computers. Your computer must meet the CAEN minimum hardware requirements.
Note: A COE installation does not automatically provide access to all CAEN "lab" software; additional software can be acquired with the COE Software Subscription. Specifically, the base COE Linux installation includes the following:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 5 w/security updates
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions of GNOME and KDE
- Open AFS client (configured to access the umich.edu AFS cell)
- Support for U-M AFS/IFS accounts (use of AFS home directory and Kerberos password)
- Support for U-M Kerberos, IMAP email, and campus printing
- Support for freely licensed applications in /usr/um and /usr/caen (including GNU software, web browsers, Java, LaTeX, etc.)
- A CAEN-developed automatic video driver system that supports the majority of PC graphics cards, without the need for manual configuration, including support for OpenGL
- Conservative security settings by default (remote access only by ssh/sftp, insecure network servers disabled etc.)
