The CAEN Operating Environment (COE) is available to all College of Engineering departments, faculty & staff. It provides a safe and secure operating system that is consistent with the College environment. Including the same security and anti-virus software that have been applied by CAEN in its computing labs (at the time of installation), a COE is more current than the original vendor OS release. CAEN can also customize the COE installation for your department to include your add-on applications. The one-time customization is done on a time and materials basis.

CAEN will provide free training on how to install the COE for departmental computing staff. As long as your departmental staff install the COE, the COE is free. After the installation, machine owners take full control over the maintenance and operation of the computer including any additional operating system and anti-virus software updates, or backups. CAEN will provide brief instructions on how to obtain subsequent patches and updates. Those who do not want to be burdened with these tasks should consider purchasing the COE Update Subscription.

COE installations are currently available for the following CAEN-supported operating systems, and include network configuration:

• Windows XP Professional
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Add-on Service Subscriptions are also available. A COE installation is required in order to subscribe to any of these services. For more detailed information on each service, choose from the following list:

To order a COE or any of the add-on service subscriptions for your computer, visit the CAEN Ordering & Purchasing page.

• The CAEN Operating Environment (COE) is available for a one-time fee of $100; it is free to departments whose computing staff has been trained by CAEN to install the COE.
• The charge for a COE reinstall on the same computer is $100.

Additional Notes

• A COE does not include CAEN-licensed software. To take full advantage of all available CAEN software offerings, the COE Software Subscription is available.
• A COE does not include free updates to the operating system or software. To receive free, automatic updates as they become available, the COE Update Subscription is required.
• Backups are not included in the base COE installation, but are available via the Connected Backup Subscription service (Windows-only).
• Requests for system administration activities to be performed by CAEN on computers without the COE Update Subscription, must be submitted via the Equipment & Service Form. Billing is done on a time and materials basis to the nearest 1/2 hour.
• Prior to installing a COE or reinstalling a host with a COE, the customer is responsible for backing up all data on the host.
