Virtual CAEN Labs
ITCS offers a service called Virtual Sites which allows U-M computer users to access Campus Computing Sites software remotely from any Windows or Mac OS computer with an Internet connection:
College of Engineering (CoE) students may also access several Virtual CAEN lab computers running Windows XP. By using Virtual CAEN lab computers, eligible CAEN computing account holders can make use of several engineering applications and services from home. To begin, click the Connect Now button to be taken to the Virtual Sites page:
You will be presented with options for the type of loadset you wish to access. For CAEN's Windows XP software environment, select Engineering (CAEN) Legacy XP:
Click the Request Connection button and you will be connected. Note: If you are using Mozilla Firefox, you may be asked to open a file; simply click OK and Remote Desktop Connection should open:
Once connected, you will be prompted for your U-M uniqname and UMICH.EDU (Kerberos) password, similar to logging into a computer in a CAEN computer lab:
Accessing Online File Storage
Upon login, Virtual CAEN computers will automatically connect to several file storage locations and mount them as network drives under My Computer, exactly like what is done on PCs in CAEN computing labs. These drives include:
-
H: - ITCS IFS Personal Home Directory (e.g. /afs/umich.edu/user/u/n/uniqname)
-
J: - CAEN NAS Course Directories (e.g. \\caen-course.engin.umich.edu)
-
K: - ITCS IFS Course Directories (e.g. /afs/umich.edu/class)
-
N: - CAEN NAS Personal Space (e.g. \\storage.engin.umich.edu\home)
-
R: - CAEN & ITCS AFS Root Directories (e.g. /afs/umich.edu & /afs/engin.umich.edu)
The network drives will appear under My Computer, as shown below:
Additional Notes
Since Virtual CAEN lab computers use Windows XP, users may see some differences in how they access files and software compared to CAEN lab computers running Windows Vista:
- Login access to the Virtual CAEN lab computers is restricted to CAEN account holders with access to CAEN computer labs.
- In the Windows XP Virtual CAEN lab environment, only the Desktop & My Documents folders are able to be redirected to an individual's NAS space. These are stored in a folder at \\storage\home\windat. Windows Vista allows several more folders to be redirected, stored in \\storage\home\windat.V2. For more information, please click here.
- CAEN lab computers running Windows Vista provide a roaming profile service, so many personalized settings travel with each user from lab to lab. This feature is not compatible with the Virtual CAEN lab computers running WIndows XP. For more information on roaming profiles, please click here.
- Since Virtual CAEN lab computers run the older Windows XP software environment, application availability and version numbers may differ from those installed on Windows Vista computers located in CAEN computer labs.
