Overview of CAEN Computer Labs

Students working in the FXB labCAEN administers several Engineering-only computer labs in College of Engineering (CoE) buildings on North Campus. In addition, CAEN computers can be found in some Residential Halls as well as buildings on Central Campus including the Shapiro Undergraduate Library and the Ross Academic Center. The computers in these locations are only available to CoE students, faculty, and staff with a valid CAEN computing account. Computers in "CAEN labs" are dual-boot PC desktops which run both the Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux operating systems.

All CAEN computer labs are open 24 hours a day. Some buildings, however, are closed to non-departmental individuals during evening and weekend hours. Only people in those departments will be able to use the labs while the building is closed. These include:

  • Cooley Building: Open 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Mon.-Fri.
  • NAME Building: Open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Mon.-Fri.
  • Pierpont Commons: Open 7:00 a.m. to Midnight, Mon.-Fri.; 8:00 a.m. to Midnight, Sat.-Sun.
  • Space Research Building: Open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Mon.-Fri.

If you require access to a building outside of the open hours, please send email to coe-access@umich.edu.

The Duderstadt Center

The Duderstadt Center is not a CAEN computer lab. While it does contain over 350 CAEN computers, it is a campus-wide facility and the computers located there are open to all University of Michigan students. A CAEN computing account is not required for access, and the computers offer the same software environment that is available in the CAEN's Engineering-only computing labs.

The Duderstadt Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all members of the U-M community. Refer to the following page for the current holiday and seasonal hours:

Note: Printing services in the Duderstadt Center are operated by ITCS Sites. Individuals must have an ITCS Basic Computing Package in order to print in the Duderstadt Center. For information on the printing services in CAEN computer labs, please refer to the following web page:

Questions or comments regarding the information about CAEN labs on this site can be directed to the CAEN Hotline at (734) 764-CAEN.
