1: What is Camp CAEN?

Camp CAEN is a computer science and engineering summer camp sponsored by the University of Michigan College of Engineering IT department known as CAEN. Course offerings range from programming to web design as well as more advanced computer topics. With nearly unlimited access to the University's computing resources, campers get incredible exposure to the facilities of the University that very few can ever experience.

2: Who attends Camp?

All Camp CAEN classes and sesssions are open to students ages 12 to 17. They come from all over the country, not just from Michigan, as well as many different backgrounds. All campers have a passion for computer science and engineering and just plain enjoy working and fooling around with a computer.

This year, the one-week Digital Photo and Web Workshop class is also open to younger students, ages 10 to 12, as commuter only.

3: Is their any Financial Aid available for Camp CAEN?

A limited number of partial scholarships are available.  Please contact the Camp Director to request a scholarship.  Scholarships are granted based upon need and only if there is still room in the class after June 1st.

4: What is the daily structure of the camp?

The weekday schedule is as follows:

8:30 - Morning class lecture and lab
11:30 - Lunch
12:15 - Outdoor Recreation
1:00 - Afternoon class lecture and lab
3:30 - Free time
5:00 - Commuters leave for home; Residential campers head to the dorms for dinner and free time

5: What is the University of Michigan like?

The University itself is quite large. The campus is split in to two sections, appropriately named North campus and Central campus. Camp CAEN is held at the University's North campus, which houses the University's College of Engineering as well as the School of Music and the Art and Architecture departments. North campus also includes Bursley Residence Hall, which is where residential campers stay, the Duderstadt Center, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) building, and the Pierpont Commons. Take a look at North Campus!

6: Can I get a refund if I am unable to attend Camp CAEN?

The $150 deposit is refundable only if you are not accepted into our program. No refunds for tuition will be issued after May 15 unless there is a documented medical emergency.

7: Should I bring a laptop to Camp CAEN?

We strongly recommend that commuter students DO NOT BRING a laptop. Residential students can bring a laptop to camp if they want to have a computer in their dorm room. Please note that in most cases, students will not be allowed to use their laptops for Camp CAEN classes or instruction.

In either event, please do not leave your computer unattended. Camp CAEN will not be held responsible for lost or stolen computers.

8: What if I have a question that is not addressed here?

Many of the current camp staff have not only many years of staff experience but also experience as campers themselves. There are many ways you can contact someone if you have further questions! You can send an email message to campcaen@umich.edu.
