Student Engineering Teams

CAEN (Engineering-only) computer labs are intended to support the academic and instructional needs for College of Engineering (CoE) students. Computer sites elsewhere on campus (outside of the Duderstadt Center - see points below) do not provide adequate resources for an Engineering student's course work.

Recognizing that Student Engineering Teams provide valuable knowledge and experience to CoE students, and that on occasion non-Engineering students may participate in these teams, CAEN may provide non-Engineering members of an Engineering student team access to CAEN computer labs. The non-Engineering student must be actively enrolled in courses for the current semester, and must be in good standing with the University (as verified by MAIS). In addition, the need for access to CAEN computing labs must be established in written form by the team's College of Engineering faculty advisor. A student team's Engineering faculty advisor may submit an account request online at Contact CAEN, or by emailing caen@umich.edu.

Before submitting a request, however, Engineering faculty advisors are asked to carefully consider the following:

  • CAEN (Engineering-only) computer labs represent a scarce resource to College of Engineering students; each "seat" is valuable to CoE students for their course work. Principles of good stewardship need to be applied before making these types of account requests.
  • The Duderstadt Center is a campus-wide facility, and is open to all U-M students regardless of their school or college affiliation. It contains over 350 CAEN computers which offer the same software environment that is available in the CAEN (Engineering-only) computer labs.

Note: All students granted access to CAEN computer labs should view this access as a privilege, not a right, and should act in an according manner. Those with access to CAEN resources are subject to CAEN policies and regulations, outlined in the CAEN Conditions of Use.
