Expiration of CAEN Accounts

All CAEN computing accounts are validated for expiration during the Fall and Winter semesters using the University database (i.e. MAIS) for continuity of student enrollment and faculty/staff employment. If you are no longer eligible for a CAEN computing account because your status at the College of Engineering has changed (e.g. you are not enrolled in courses, you have graduated, or you have left your position at the CoE, etc.), CAEN will notify you via email three weeks into the semester that your account will expire. If your account is not validated, it will expire six weeks into the semester.

Note: CAEN reserves the right to expire CAEN computing access for any student who is no longer eligible for reasons such as withdrawing from courses or transferring out of Engineering during the semester. CAEN also reserves the right to validate and expire computing accounts for employees based on their last day of employment at the College of Engineering, even if this date is outside of the normal account validation period.

Account Expiration Schedule

The CAEN account expiration schedule for Fall 2008 is as follows:

  • Tuesday, September 23 - Initial warning messages regarding the expiration of CAEN accounts are sent via email.
  • Tuesday, October 7 - First grace period ends; Access to CAEN computing labs is disabled for all invalid accounts; Final warning message is sent via email.
  • Monday, October 13 - Final grace period ends at midnight; Expired CAEN accounts are backed up, and deleted soon after.

If after receiving an account expiration warning from CAEN you believe that an error has been made and you are eligible to retain your computing account, you may submit an online application at the CAEN Account Validation web page. Inquiries must be submitted using the above online form in order to be considered, and you will have a total of three weeks in which to respond to the warning message. All requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Information outlining who is eligible for a CAEN account is available on the CAEN Account Eligibility Requirements page.

CAEN Account Access Fees

If you are required to pay the CAEN account access fee to extend your CAEN account for the semester, you must visit the CAEN Hotline with your Mcard for verification. The fees for non-Engineering and/or undeclared students who are taking Engineering classes, or anyone who is not eligible for a CAEN computing account, are listed on our account eligibility information page. Note: All CAEN account fees are subject to change, so refer to the account eligibility information page for the current amounts.

Before Your CAEN Account Expires

If you have graduated, withdrawn, or are otherwise no longer at the College of Engineering, you are strongly encouraged to retrieve the files stored in your CAEN account as soon as possible, before your account expires. This will save future trouble, and delays from retrieving your files from backup servers. You can simply copy your files to a DVD or CD from any CAEN computer, or download them remotely using SFTP from your home computer or laptop. See our set of FAQs for information on how to access the files in your CAEN network-attached storage (NAS) space:

What will happen to my @engin.umich.edu email address?

After your CAEN account expires, message sent to your uniqname@engin.umich.edu email address will continue to forward to the location you specify in your U-M Online Directory entry. If you do not wish to keep this forwarding in place, it can be removed, and messages will bounce back to the sender as undeliverable.

Other Computing Accounts at U-M

Please note that only your CAEN computing account will be affected by this process. Any other computing accounts you may have at the University (including ITCS/UMICH, DCO/EECS, CAC, etc.) will not be affected by this process. However, they can provide you with an alternative location to store the files you once kept in your CAEN account. For example, information on accessing your ITCS computing account can be found at:
