Account Eligibility & Fees

Questions regarding the information on this web page can be directed to the CAEN Hotline, or Contact CAEN online.

Introduction

Note: Access to CAEN computing resources is delegated using ITCS Kerberos (UMICH.EDU) and Active Directory (UMROOT) passwords for authentication. Individuals should obtain their ITCS computing account and passwords prior to requesting access to CAEN computing resources.

Students - College of Engineering (CoE) students who are enrolled in classes for the current semester, including visiting scholars, receive a CAEN computing account at no additional cost. Students must have declared their Engineering major before the Drop/Add deadline to be eligible for a free CAEN account.

Non-Engineering students taking CoE courses are eligible for a CAEN account, but must purchase the account each semester for a differential fee. This includes students who have not declared their major within the CoE prior to the Drop/Add date for the current term. To be exempt from the differential fee during the current semester, students must have declared their major in the CoE before the Drop/Add deadline (as verified by student enrollment data from MAIS).

See below for the full list of eligibility requirements for a CAEN computing account.

Faculty & Staff - Regular CoE faculty and staff also receive a free (College-funded) CAEN computing account.

Temporary employees and appointed visiting faculty may also receive a limited CAEN account free of charge by submitting a request to the CAEN Hotline. These limited accounts do not permit CAEN computing lab access, and are validated on a semester-by-semester basis. If CAEN computing lab access is required for a limited account holder, then the full CAEN account fee will apply. In addition, if CAEN can find no official CoE appointment or affiliation (as verified by University employment data from MAIS) for an individual, then the full fee will also apply. Departmental contacts may use our online request form to request access for new members of their department.

Eligibility for a Free, College-funded CAEN Account

Unrestricted CAEN computing accounts (accounts which include full access to CAEN computing labs) are available at no charge only to the following individuals:

  • Undergraduate and graduate students of the College of Engineering (CoE) who are actively enrolled in U-M courses for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major (prior to the Drop/Add date) in Computer Science who are actively enrolled in U-M courses for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major (prior to the Drop/Add date) in Applied Physics who are actively enrolled in U-M courses for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major (prior to the Drop/Add date) in the Business School who are actively enrolled in College of Engineering courses for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS.
  • Undergraduate and graduate Geological Science students with a concentration (prior to the Drop/Add date) in Earth System Science and Engineering (ESSE) who are actively enrolled in College of Engineering courses for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS.
  • Visiting scholars whose appointment is current and active in the CoE, as verified by MAIS.
  • Regular (non-temporary) employees of the CoE, including faculty and research fellows, whose appointment is current and active, as verified by MAIS.
  • Professors emeriti whose appointment is current and active in the CoE, as verified by MAIS.
  • Anyone who has paid the CAEN account access fee.

Limited CAEN computing access is available to the following groups at no charge. This access does not include many of the services offered to unrestricted account holders, including access to CAEN computing labs (Note: These groups do have access to all CAEN computers located in the Duderstadt Center):

  • Temporary employees, including visiting faculty/researchers, with an appointment in the College of Engineering (CoE), as verified by MAIS.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students of the CoE who are actively enrolled in Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) through the Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC), as verified by the ECRC and MAIS.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students of the CoE who are actively enrolled in a study abroad program, as verified by the International Programs in Engineering (IPE) office.
  • Engineering Ph.D. students, enrolled as candidates or pre-candidates, who are actively working on a thesis, as verified by their thesis advisor; and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS. Note: Accounts only valid on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Non-Engineering students enrolled in Engineering 101 for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS. Note: Access is granted to the CAEN computing labs only in Pierpont Commons.
  • Non-Engineering students who are members of a Student Engineering Team, who are actively enrolled in courses for the current semester, and are in good standing with the University, as verified by MAIS.
  • Participants in College of Engineering Programs.

Fees for Those Not Eligible for a Free Account

CAEN computing accounts may only be purchased on a semester-by-semester basis. Fees vary based on an individual's affiliation:

Differential Fee - If you are a non-Engineering student taking Engineering classes in either the Fall or Winter term, the fees for a CAEN computing account are:

  • $159.00 per semester for Freshmen and Sophomores.
  • $288.00 per semester for Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students.

For Spring and Summer half-terms, the fees are:

  • $79.50 per semester for Freshmen and Sophomores.
  • $144.00 per semester for Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students.

Class standing is based on the amount of credit hours a student has completed; not the number of years at the University. These account fees are billed directly to student tuition accounts. Charges will occur on the student's account statement with a description CAEN Account followed by the semester (i.e. Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer) and student's class standing (e.g. FR/SP, JR/SR/GRAD).

Full Fee - Any individual who is not eligible for a CAEN computing account (as detailed above) must pay the full access fee of $824.00 per semester to obtain an account. This fee may be charged to departments via University shortcode accounts. Some examples of these individuals include:

  • Any U-M student who is not enrolled for classes in the current semester, as verified by MAIS.
  • Any U-M faculty or staff member who has no appointment to the CoE, as verified by MAIS.
  • Any U-M visitor who has no official affiliation or appointment to the CoE, as verified by MAIS.
  • Anyone who is eligible for a limited CAEN account, but requires an unrestricted account, which includes access to CAEN computing labs.

NOTE: Refund requests are taken on a case-by-case basis, and are only given if requested prior to the Drop/Add deadline of the current term.
