Overview of Computing Accounts at U-M
All students, faculty, and staff of the University of Michigan (U-M) are eligible for a centralized U-M computing and email account, which is provided by Information Technology Central Services (ITCS). This is the primary computing account for the U-M community. It provides a Basic Computing Package (BCP) for access to campus-wide computing resources, such as email (mail.umich.edu) and online file storage (mfile.umich.edu). This ITCS computing account (often referred to as a UMICH account) is what will be used to print (mprint.umich.edu) in campus-wide computing facilities like the Duderstadt Center. Further information on ITCS accounts can be found on their web site at: http://www.itcs.umich.edu/your-account/
CAEN offers supplemental computing resources specifically for the College of Engineering (CoE) community. Depending on an individual's role at the CoE (i.e. faculty, staff, temp, student, etc.), additional CAEN computing services may or may not be available. A brief description of basic CAEN services is provided below. For further information, contact the CAEN Hotline at 764-CAEN.
Note: Access to CAEN computing resources is delegated using ITCS Kerberos (UMICH.EDU) and Active Directory (UMROOT) passwords for authentication. It is necessary to obtain your ITCS computing account and passwords prior to requesting access to CAEN computing resources.
CAEN Computing Accounts
All current students, and regular faculty and staff of the College of Engineering are eligible for unrestricted CAEN computer access. Non-Engineering students who are enrolled in Engineering courses may also obtain access to CAEN resources free of charge, but with reduced services. Faculty who obtain "Emeritus" status upon retirement are eligible to keep their access to CAEN resources after they retire. Temporary employees of the College may also obtain access to CAEN computing resources free of charge, but in most cases are limited from full access to CAEN computing labs. In situations where no CoE affiliation exists, individuals may obtain access to CAEN computing resources, but must first pay a fee. For more information on eligibility and restrictions, please see our Account Eligibility page.
Acquiring access to CAEN computing resources (often referred to simply as having a CAEN Account) grants individuals access to certain services based on their affiliation to the CoE. All CAEN accounts, including "limited" accounts, provide access to the CAEN computers located in the Duderstadt Center. Other services are only available to "unrestricted" account holders, including:
- 24-hour access to CAEN computer labs
- A printing allocation for use in CAEN computing labs
- A Network-Attached Storage (NAS) directory
- Access to Windows Virtual CAEN Labs
- Access to Linux Login Servers
- Access to Engineering-specific software
Note: All users with access to CAEN resources are subject to CAEN policies and regulations. These policies are outlined in the CAEN Conditions of Use.
