Job Description of a Board Member

A. General Responsibilities of a Board Member

  1. To establish program policies of the Society in accordance with the Constitution and By-Laws.

  2. To administer the affairs and business of the Society.

  3. To participate in strategic planning.

  4. To conduct continuous evaluation of the effectiveness of the programs.

  5. To elect Officers of the Board and to designate its Chair.

  6. To approve the creation of special committees of the Board.

  7. To satisfy all legal requirements and responsibilities as provided for the Board of Governors of a non-profit corporation under State law.

B. Specific Duties of a Board Member

  1. To attend and actively participate in all Board and Committee meetings and activities.

  2. To help the Board come to group decisions.

  3. To perform personal assignments effectively.

  4. To help interpret the Society's purpose and programs to the alumni community.

  5. To become knowledgeable regarding the Constitution, By-Laws, Standing Committee and Special Committee responsibilities.

  6. To submit names and resumes of prospective Board and committee members to the Chair.

  7. To work closely with the College of Engineering Staff Personnel assigned to the activities of the Alumni Society.

  8. To become knowledgeable regarding the relationship of the College of Engineering Alumni Society to the University of Michigan Alumni Association.

C. Terms of Service

  1. Board members must be alumni of the College of Engineering.

  2. Members are elected by members of the Engineering Alumni Society (any Engineering graduate) at the Engineering Alumni Society Annual Meeting each fall.

  3. The term of service is three years, and incumbents may be re-elected for a second term. The term limit is six years.

  4. A slate of candidates to fill vacancies is presented by the Board Nominations Committee at the Annual Meeting. Alumni interested in serving on the Board may email engin.alumni.relations@umich.edu so that their names may be given to the Nomination Committee for consideration.
