Alumni Notes
Don Malloure (BSE CE ’50) was only four years removed from the College of Engineering when he assumed the presidency of the C.A. Hull Co., a Michigan firm involved in road work and heavy construction. Malloure had attended Michigan Engineering on a G.I. Bill after a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. He and his wife, Lucille, created The Donald and Lucille Malloure Scholarship, a major source of support for Michigan Engineering students.
Malloure’s three sons, who now operate the company, also earned degrees from the College of Engineering: Joseph (BSE CE ’72), John (BSE CE ’76) and Paul (BSE CE ’78); his daughter, Susan, has a U-M BBA (’74). Malloure was the grandfather of 13 grandchildren, and great-grandfather of one.
Merle C. Potter (MS Aero ’64, PhD EM ’65) recently coauthored Advanced Engineering Mathematics and Thermodynamics for Engineers, his 22nd and 23rd books.
Jerald Thaler (MSE ChE ’78, MSE ’81) was named the Michigan Water Environment Association's Industrial Pretreatment Professional of the Year for 2006.
Patrick Farrell (BSE ME ’76, PhD ’82) has been named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering.
Philip C. Mikula (BS MSE, Metallurgical Engineering ’79) has received the Automotive Industry Action Group 2005 Outstanding Achievement Award.
Paul H. Gross ( BS AOSS ’83), senior meteorologist for WDIV-TV and executive producer of weather, has been awarded his second Emmy in the past three years by the Michigan Chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences for his 2005 science and environmental reporting.
Eric Johnson (BSE EE ’89) and his wife, Wendy Rosen, welcomed their second child, Molly Eva, on August 3, 2005. Molly joins her big brother Sam, 3. The family lives in Tempe, AZ.
Thomas J. Treutler, Esq. (BSE CompE ’90) has opened a law office in Danang, Vietnam. Through USAID's STAR Program, Treutler has helped Vietnam develop its intellectual property laws to meet international standards. Treutler has appeared on several episodes of the Vietnamese variety show “Thuy Nga Paris by Night,” in which he performed comedy routines. He also appeared in a commercial for traffic safety on Vietnam National Television.
Elizabeth (Langham) Christensen (BSE Aero ’00, MSE ’02) has coauthored two novels based on the MGM television series Stargate Atlantis. The Chosen and Exogenesis were released in 2006. Christensen is a civilian engineer with the U.S. Air Force.
