Stephen W. Director, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering, has been elected an American Society of Engineering Education Fellow and has received the organization’s 2004 Benjamin Garver Lamme Award.

 

 

 

Tony England, professor, EECS, AOSS, has accepted an appointment as associate dean for academic affairs. He has also received the 2004 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Judith A. Resnik Award.

David Dowling, associate professor, ME, has been elected a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.

 

 

 

Elliot Soloway, professor, EECS, has received the Excellence in Innovation Award from the University of Michigan Tech Transfer Office.

 

 

 

Jyoti Mazumder, Robert H. Lurie Professor of Engineering, ME, MSE, received the 22nd Arthur L. Schawlow Award from the Laser Institute of America.

 

 

 

H.V. Jagadish, professor, EECS, has been named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery.

 

 

 

Falk	Hayes

Michael Falk and Kim Hayes have been honored. Falk, Dow Corning Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Hayes, professor, CEE, have received grants from the Gilbert Whitaker Fund for the Improvement of Teaching. Hayes has also received the University of Michigan Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award. Falk is also the recipient of this year’s 1938E Award.

 

 

Scott Fogler, Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering, delivered the 2004 Krug Lecture at the School of Chemical Sciences at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He was the first chemical engineer to receive this lectureship since its inception in 1974.

 

 

 

Garikipati	Lewis
Noble	Zurbuchen

Krishna Garikipati, Mark Lewis, Brian Noble and Thomas Zurbuchen have received multiple honors. The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers was presented to Assistant Professor Garikipati, ME, Associate Professor Zurbuchen, AOSS, and Assistant Professor Lewis, IOE. Garikipati has also received the U.S. Department of Energy’s Early Career Scientist and Engineer Award and has been elected to receive an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship. Garikipati and Noble, associate professor, EECS, have each received a Ruth and Joel Spira Outstanding Teaching Award.  Noble has also received a 2004-05 Michigan Engineering Education Excellence Award. Zurbuchen has also received a 2004-05 College of Engineering Service Excellence Award. Lewis has also received the Sloan Foundation’s Mentor of the Year award and the 2004 Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award.

 

 

 

Barber	Gallimore

James Barber and Alec Gallimore have been honored. Professor Barber, ME, and Professor Gallimore, Aero, have each received a 2004-05 College of Engineering Service Excellence Award. Gallimore has also received the 2004 GEM Outstanding Alumni in Academia Award.

 

 

Panos Papalambros, Donald C. Graham Professor of Engineering, ME, has been elected a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

 

 

 

Johannes Schwank, professor, ChE, testified before the House Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality to help the subcommittee address the administration’s hydrogen fuel-cell proposals.

 

 

 

Deba Dutta, professor, ME, has been selected by the National Science Foundation to serve as Program Director for the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship  program, which operates within the Division of Graduate Education. Dutta also received the Design Automation Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

 

 

Sridhar Kota, professor, ME, has received the 2004 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Machine Design Award.

Tassos Perakis, associate professor, NAME, has been named a Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

Jerry Keeler, professor, AOSS, CEE, was selected by Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to be a member of the Michigan Environmental Science Board to advise the Governor’s office on matters dealing with Michigan’s environment.

Sun, associate professor, NAME, Durfee, professor, EECS, and Koditschek, adjunct professor, EECS, have been named fellows of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Sun and Grizzle, professor, EECS, have received the 2003 Control Systems Technology Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society. Grizzle has also received a College of Engineering Research Excellence Award for 2004-05.
