Endowed professorships are nothing new. The oldest in existence is the Lucasian Chair at Cambridge University, awarded to Sir Isaac Newton in 1669. But the importance of these scholarly honors has taken on new significance for funding and maintaining an environment where the finest scholars may flourish. The following four appointments uphold this scholarly atmosphere at the College of Engineering.

Noboru Kikuchi has been appointed Roger L. McCarthy Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He’s a Fellow of the International Association for Computational Mechanics and received the Henry Russel Award from the University in 1985. His other honors include the Outstanding Teaching Award and Outstanding Research Award from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Distinguished Research Award and Distinguished Service Award from the College.

David Neuhoff has been appointed Joseph E. and Anne P. Rowe Professor of Electrical Engineering. He’s received numerous honors and awards, including the College’s Stephen S. Attwood Award. His other honors include the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Information Theory Society Service Award, the Michigan Engineering EECS Outstanding Achievement Award, the CoE Excellence in Service Award and the CoE 1938E Award. He was elected a Fellow of IEEE in 1994.

Tresa Pollock has been appointed L. H. and F. E. Van Vlack Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. She’s received numerous honors and awards including, most recently, Michigan Engineering’s Materials Science and Engineering Award for Outstanding Accomplishment, the American Society for Metals International (ASM) Materials Science Research Silver Medal and the Purdue University Outstanding Materials Engineer Award. She’s president of the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and was elected a Fellow of ASM International in 2002.

Scott Mahlke, EECS, has been appointed Morris Wellman Faculty Development Assistant Professor. Since joining the Michigan Engineering faculty in 2001, Mahlke has established an excellent teaching record and has been very successful in his research activities in the areas of application-specific processor design, compilers, computer architecture and high-level synthesis. He received an NSF CAREER award in January 2004.
