In 1947, the University’s Board of Regents created Distinguished University Professorships to recognize members of the faculty for exceptional achievement and reputation in their fields of scholarly interest and for their superior teaching skills.

Don Chaffin, G. Lawton and Louise G. Johnson Professor, IOE, BME, has received an appointment as the Richard G. Snyder Distinguished University Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering. In addition, the American Association for the Advancement of Science elected Chaffin a Fellow, Kettering University presented him with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering, and he received the Institute of Industrial Engineers Society for Work Science M. M. Ayoub Award.

Pallab Bhattacharya, James R. Mellor Professor of Engineering, has been appointed the Charles M. Vest Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Bhattacharya has an outstanding international reputation in solid-state electronics and has made pioneering contributions in the fields of optoelectronics, compound semiconductors and high-frequency electronics.
