Erdogan Gulari, Chemical Engineering, has been appointed Donald L. Katz Collegiate Professor of Chemical Engineering, named for a former departmental chair and leader in the field. Gulari's interests lie in environmental catalysis, micro-reactors for fuel processors, design and development of micro-arrays and integrated microsystems for DNA and Peptide Synthesis and diagnostic research. His many honors and awards include the ASEE AT&T Foundation Award.
Robert Smith, Industrial and Operations Engineering, has been appointed the first Altarum/ERIM Russell D. O'Neal Professor of Engineering, named for ERIM's first vice chairman. His current research interests include using global optimization in complex systems, and the determination of planning and forecast horizons for decision-making over time. His numerous honors and awards include a National Science Foundation Fellowship. He has been on the editorial staff for Mathematical Programming and Networks, Management Science since 1986.
Fisk Elected to National Academy of Sciences, Also Receives Collegiate Professorship
Lennard Fisk, Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, has been elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences - one of the highest honors that a U.S. scientist or engineer can receive. Fisk was among 72 new members and 18 foreign associates from 11 countries who received this distinction.
Fisk was recently appointed Thomas M. Donahue Collegiate Professor of Space Science, named in honor of a distinguished professor emeritus. Fisk is an active researcher in theoretical and experimental studies of the atmosphere and the formation of the heliosphere. His many honors include the NASA Distinguished Science Medal and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.

Suman Das, assistant professor, Mechanical Engineering, and Jamie Phillips, assistant professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, have received National Science Foundation CAREER Awards. Das was selected for his proposal entitled "Solid Freeform Fabrication of Heterogeneous Multifunctional Devices." Phillips received his award for his proposal "Ferroelectric Heterostructure Integration with GaAs Optoelectronic Devices."

Bernitsas and Parsons Receive Honors
Professors Michael Bernitsas and Michael Parsons, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, have received special honors from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Bernitsas received the 2003 Blakely Smith Medal. Parsons received the 2003 Webb Medal. The Blakely Smith Medal recognizes an individual for "outstanding accomplishment in ocean engineering." The Webb Medal salutes "outstanding contributions to education in naval architecture and marine or ocean engineering."
Wise Delivers Distinguished University Professor Lecture
Ken Wise, the J. Reid and Polly Anderson Professor of Manufacturing Technology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, delivered the 2003 William Gould Dow Distinguished University Professorship lecture, April 2, at the Michigan League. His lecture, "Integrated Sensors, MEMS, and Microsystems: Interfacing Electronics to the Non-Electronic World," followed a brief introduction by U-M President Mary Sue Coleman, who said Wise's career was a "clear illustration of the best kind of interaction among disciplines." Stephen W. Director, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering, said Wise had "put the College of Engineering on the map in the area of microsystems."

Hollister and Solomon Receive Henry Russel Award
Scott Hollister, associate professor, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Surgery, and Michael Solomon, associate professor, Chemical Engineering, have received the 2003 Henry Russel Award, which recognizes exceptional scholarship and ability as a teacher. The award is one of the highest the University confers on junior members of its faculty.
Ulsoy to NSF
Galip Ulsoy, William Clay Ford Professor of Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, has taken a leave of absence to become the new Director of Civil and Mechanical Systems at the National Science Foundation.
Perakis Receives Two Prestigious Fellowships
A.N. (Tassos) Perakis, associate professor, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, has received two honors: a Boeing A.D. Welliver Summer Faculty Fellowship and an Office of Naval Research Distinguished Faculty Fellowship.

Amy Cohn, assistant professor, Industrial and Operations Engineering, Rachel Goldman, associate professor, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mingyan Liu, assistant professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, have received the University of Michigan's Elizabeth Caroline Crosby Research Awards, named after world-renowned neuroanatomist Elizabeth Caroline Crosby. Cohn is working on network design problems in areas such as transportation, logistics and telecommunications. Goldman is investigating the effect of hydrogen on the properties of narrow-gap nitride semiconductor alloys that hold promise for a wide variety of optoelectronic applications. Liu's work focuses on object searching, using multiple sensors with energy constraints, in a large wireless sensor network.
Nair Honored Twice
Vijay Nair, professor, Industrial and Operations Engineering, received the 2001 Youden Prize for the best applications paper in technometrics, and the 2002 Brumbaugh Award for the single most important paper that related to quality control and appeared in a publication sponsored by the American Society for Quality.

William Clay Ford Professor of Manufacturing Galip Ulsoy received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 2002 Leadership Award, as well as the Best Paper Award for the article "Identification of a Driver Steering Model and Model Uncertainty from Driving Simulator Data," which he co-authored with Liang-Kuang Chen, a former doctoral student in ME. Professor Massoud Kaviany was awarded the prestigious Heat Transfer Memorial Award.

Atreya Receives Best Paper Award
Arvind Atreya, professor, Mechanical Engineering, was honored with the best paper award for "Theory of Wind-Opposed Flame Spreading Over a Charring Solid." He received the award at the 2001 ASME National Heat Transfer Conference in Anaheim, California.
Mooney Receives Faculty Recognition Award
David J. Mooney, professor, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, received a Faculty Recognition Award. Faculty Recognition Award for "substantive contributions to the University through significant achievements in research and other scholarly activities; excellence in teaching, advising and mentoring; and participation in service activities."
Shin and Former Students Receive Honors
Kang Shin, the Kevin and Nancy O'Connor Professor of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received the IEEE Communications Society William R. Bennett Prize Paper Award in the Field of Communications Circuits and Techniques. The paper, "The Blue Active Queue Management Algorithms," appeared in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking (Vol. 10, No. 4, pp. 513-528). Shin shared the award with former students who helped develop the paper: Wu-chang Feng, Dilip D. Kandlur and Debanjan Saha.
