AOSS "Instrumental" in Success of Titan Exploration

cassiniA team in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences (AOSS) helped build an instrument responsible for the abundance of recent Huygens Probe information from the Saturn moon, Titan. Sushil Atreya, professor, AOSS, part of the research group responsible for examining the data has been quoted recently in The New York Times and Washington Post (see "Recent Media Coverage").

Studying RABBIT's Feet

robotJessy Grizzle, professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has developed the control theory for the first known robot to walk and balance like a human. Named "RABBIT," this French-U.S. research project has many applications for healthcare.

Students Take Over Buses for Credit

bussmAn AOSS student-led design team is developing a GPS tracking system for the University's buses. The University wants the team to keep track of buses, let riders know where buses are and communicate expected arrival times at bus stops. The project involves all aspects of bus operation:

  • Mechanical and electrical interfaces
  • Bus and bus-stop display screens
  • The Web site

New Chair of Aero

Wei Shyy, former professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida, has been appointed chair of the CoE Department of Aerospace Engineering, effective January 1, 2005, pending Regental approval. He received his MS and PhD degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan in 1981 and 1982, respectively. Prior to joining the University of Florida in 1988, he was a staff scientist at the GE Corporate Research and Development Center in Schenectady, New York. Wei is widely recognized as a leading researcher in the areas of computational and modeling techniques involving fluid flow, interfacial dynamics and moving boundary problems.

Anniversary Web Site Second Best in Midwest

150iconThe Council for Advancement and Support of Education's fifth district (CASE V), comprising six Midwestern states, awarded the College's 150th Anniversary Web site a Silver Award for Individual Web Page or Section during the first-ever "Pride of CASE V" awards program in Chicago.
