Sesquicentennial Banquet Concludes Anniversary Celebration
Nearly 300 members of the College and University communities gathered on the evening of May 14 to celebrate the pinnacle event of the 150th Anniversary of Michigan Engineering, the sesquicentennial banquet. Held on the North Campus Diag, the banquet included remarks from President Mary Sue Coleman, who also read a letter from Governor Granholm, followed by dinner and dancing. Alumni vintners C. Robert (BSE IE '67) and Mary (AB '66) Kidder and Bernard (MSE '67)and Ronni (AM '67) Lacroute provided wines for the evening. Entertaining remarks by Bob Kidder and Kevin O'Connor (BSE EE '83) highlighted the event.
Public Campaign Begins with Momentum
Progress & Promise: 150th Anniversary Campaign kicked off its public phase at the May 14 donor recognition ceremony and reception. As a result of the generosity of leadership donors, gifts and pledges as of April 30 totaled $134,438,406. This figure represents 45% of the College's $300 million goal. Funds will support:
- research in cellular and molecular biotechnology, information technology, and nanotechnology and integrated microsystems;
- professorships;
- scholarships;
- and other CoE priorities.
Enrollment Way Up for Fall
Responding to the challenge posed by a new admissions process, the College took aggressive recruiting steps that resulted in dramatic growth in this fall's enrollment. Through innovative communications and increased scholarship support, the number of students paying enrollment deposits for the fall grew from 1104 last year to 1405 this year, despite 21% fewer applications. Quality remains strong.
From Grease to Gas
A CoE student team has demonstrated that it is economically and technically feasible to harvest the 10,700 gallons of waste grease produced in the 10 campus dining halls to make an effective biodiesel fuel, which the group produced in the lab and tested on a small U-M tractor. http://www.engin.umich.edu.
