National media responded to the College's work in clean-air technology and palmtop use in the classroom. Local media covered the College's 150th Anniversary.

150th Anniversary Grabs the Spotlight

Beginning with a U-M/Houston football-game halftime salute to the College, and followed by a Lurie Carillon rendition of "Happy Birthday," the 150th-Anniversary celebration is off to an exciting start. Come back to campus, see the banners and experience the excitement of this great year. Enjoy the historical display in the Media Union Gallery through October 24. University Establishes New Admissions Process

As a result of the Supreme Court's decision, the University has developed a new undergraduate admissions process. The new process gathers more information about student applicants and will include multiple levels of highly individualized review. Detailed information about the process is available on the U-M Web site.

AOSS Faculty Member is Co-Investigator on First Mars Scout Mission

NASA has selected "Phoenix" as the first in a new line of Scout missions in the agency's Mars Exploration Program. Associate Professor Nilton Renno, AOSS, is a co-investigator on the project. The $325-million project will launch in 2007, seeking evidence of a habitable zone on Mars and studying the geologic history of water.

Technology Breakthrough Reduces Telephone and Computer Interference

NERS faculty have reported a major breakthrough that will reduce microwave noise from microwave oven magnetrons. This invention could reduce telephone and computer interference caused by the 60 million microwave ovens sold each year. Ultimately, it may have applications for chemotherapy and other medical treatments. (More...)

Computer Science and Engineering Building Groundbreaking Set

On Friday, November 21, the College will break ground on a 104,000 square-foot computer science and engineering building to be sited just west of the H.H. Dow Building. Scheduled to be completed in 2006, this structure will provide research, teaching and meeting space to accommodate program growth over the next decade. (More...)

New Chair, Interim Chair Appointed

Driscoll

Professor Tamas I. Gombosi has been appointed chair of the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences. Gombosi has achieved international prominence for his work in the fields of cometary plasma physics, predictive global space weather simulations and fundamental kinetic theory of gases and plasmas.

Professor James F. Driscoll has been appointed interim chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Driscoll will serve in this position until a permanent chair is appointed. He has gained international recognition for his experimental research in the area of turbulent premixed and diffusion flames and for modeling complex combustion phenomena.

Group Receives Design Competition's Only Student Recognition

davincilogosmProCEED (Program for Community Engagement in Engineering Design) received the only student recognition at the da Vinci Awards at a dinner at Ford Field in Detroit on September 19. ProCEED is a program aimed at encouraging students to use their developing engineering skills to help individuals with disabilities. The da Vinci Awards honor exceptional design and engineering achievements that empower people of all abilities. (More...)

College Takes Lead in Product Lifecycle Management

With the support of 11 charter-member companies , the College has embarked on an aggressive path toward Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) leadership. PLM ensures that an entire supply chain receives and shares full data at all stages of a product's lifecycle. Time-to-market and cost savings could be substantial.

New Technology Upgrades Classrooms, Other Locations

Thirteen new high-brightness projectors and four upgraded models are improving the environment of CoE classrooms. The new projectors support wireless connections. CAEN has installed wireless networking in a number of locations within the College, including most CAEN labs, a number of lounges and gathering places, the Lurie Engineering Center, Media Union, IOE, the Class of '47E Reflecting Pool and the patio in front of the Media Union. More installations will follow.

CoE Merchandise Now Available Online!

You asked, we listened. The CoE now offers customized College merchandise online. Then, read what other alumni have to say. Remember the good times, add your memories to the annals and participate in the celebration of a lifetime.

Five Former Deans to Speak During Alumni-Weekend Forum

What is it like to lead one of the finest engineering colleges in the world? Come hear Gordon Van Wylen ('65-'72), David Ragone ('72-'80), Jim Duderstadt ('81-'86), Chuck Vest ('86-'89), Peter Banks('90-'94) and Steve Director (current) -- five former deans and the current dean of the College -- who will share their experiences at a special Michigan Engineering Alumni Weekend Forum on Friday, October 17, at 2 p.m. in Chesebrough Auditorium. Regent Kathy White will moderate the panel. The weekend also will include a forum on wireless technology, the Alumni Society Awards Dinner and more. More information about all of the Alumni Weekend activities is available online.

Continuing-Education Opportunities Available Online

If you enjoy learning, take advantage of the many online opportunities for professional development and continuing education through the College's Center for Professional Development. With programs available in nine languages, CPD courses include Six Sigma, IT, ergonomics, manufacturing and more. Conferences, non-credit courses, certification programs and degree programs provide a variety of learning options. Additional information is available online.

Coming to Ann Arbor soon? If you haven't been back to campus in awhile, you may be surprised to discover several Central Campus streets--State, Liberty, Thompson, Maynard and North University--have been converted from one-way to two-way. A map and details are available online.
