1. Aerospace Alum Delivers Graduation Keynote Address
Charla Wise (BSE AS '75), Vice President of Engineering at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, addressed the College of Engineering spring commencement audience, April 27 at Crisler Arena. Ms. Wise (http://www.engin.umich.edu/news/charlawise/) gave graduates a "GO BLUE" set of words to live by: Grow, Opportunity, Balance, Love, Use and Excellence.
2. Alumni Society Board Holds Spring Meeting
The Engineering Alumni Society Board of Governors held its spring meeting at Michigania, May 17-19. Meeting breakouts focused on initiatives to immediately involve GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) alumni in College activities and ways to engage more alumni in College recruiting efforts. 4. Ewing (NERS, MSE) Named Guggenheim Fellow
The Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (http://www.gf.org/) has selected Rod Ewing, professor, Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering, and Geological Sciences, as a Guggenheim Fellow in the category of Science Writing.
5. Stefanopoulou (ME) Earns "Top 100 Young Innovator" Distinction
Anna Stefanopoulou, associate professor, Mechanical Engineering, has been named to the TR100 list of top young innovators.
6. Perkins (ME) Recognized as Top Distance Educator
Noel Perkins, professor, Mechanical Engineering, has received the GM TEP 2001 Outstanding Distance Learning Award. The award recognizes his presentation of the ME542 Vehicle Dynamics course to full-time GM employees pursuing the master's degree. The CoE's Center for Professional Development (http://cpd.engin.umich.edu) offers the course.
7. Thompson (ChE), England (EECS) Receive Diversity Recognition
Professor Levi Thompson (ChE), associate dean for undergraduate education, was selected to receive the 2002 GEM Outstanding Alumni in Academia Award. The award recognizes his achievements in support of the mission of increasing the participation of underrepresented minorities at the master's and doctoral levels in engineering and science.

8. Mourou (EECS) To Serve as Director of "New" CUOS
After its maximum 11 years, the NSF Science and Technology Center (STC) Grant for the pioneering Center for Ultrafast Optical Science (CUOS) officially ends July 31. The College will help fund a "new" CUOS organized around five laboratories: the Ultrafast Development Laboratory, Ultrafast Optics and Electronics Core/Laboratory, High Field Science Core/Laboratory, Materials Science Core/Laboratory and Medical Applications Core/Laboratory. Professor Gérard Mourou, A.D. Moore Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, will continue to serve as CUOS director. An executive committee will govern CUOS with an external advisory board's consulting support.
9. Kabamba (AERO, EECS) to join College's Executive Committee
Professor Pierre Kabamba (AERO, EECS) has been approved by the Regents as a member of the College of Engineering Executive Committee following College faculty elections.
10. Human-Powered Sub Team Seeks Help

Michigan Engineering Fund gifts this year equipped classrooms with new technology, helped the College fund scholarships and provided new equipment for the Mechanical Engineering and Marine Design Labs.
