1. Ann Lurie Gives $25 Million to College
Chicago-based philanthropist Ann Lurie has pledged $25 million to the University of Michigan College of Engineering, the largest gift ever received by the College. This gift will help support new programs in biomedical engineering and integrated microsystems. Drawing on the College's historic and internationally recognized strengths, these programs offer tremendous opportunities to improve the quality of everyday life. With this gift, Lurie has given $37 million to the College of Engineering and a combined total of $45 million to the University of Michigan. She is the widow of Robert H. Lurie (BSE IOE '64, MSE '66).
2. Emeritus Weekend a Success
When the University held Emeritus Weekend, May 31-June 1, over 100 Engineering alumni and guests came to campus to celebrate. They enjoyed lectures, luncheons, tours and dinner. It was the Emeritus year for the Class of '52E, who announced the establishment of a scholarship endowment as their Emeritus gift during the College of Engineering Emeritus Luncheon. The first '52E Scholar will be named in 2003. The Class of '47E announced its second legacy gift (the '47E Reflecting Pool was its first). The class has set up an endowment and will name the first '47E Scholar this fall. For more information about alumni activities, email engin.alumni.relations@umich.edu.
3. CoE Student Wins First Student Competition at Apple Design Awards
Computer Science senior Dan Schimpf won "Best Mac OS X Student Product" at the Apple Design Awards during the company's Worldwide Developers Conference.
4. EECS Team Wins Design Automation Conference Award for Third Consecutive Year
EECS PhD candidates Steven Martin and Roy Olsson and Interim Department Chair Rich Brown received best overall paper and best in the conceptual category honors in the worldwide Student Design Contest at this year's Design Automation Conference. It was the third consecutive year the College earned the overall award.
5. Teams Place Fourth in International and National Competitions
The Formula SAE team placed fourth out of 140 teams at the international Formula SAE collegiate design competition.
The Steel Bridge team placed fourth out of 44 competitors at the National Student Steel Bridge Competition during ASCE's 150th anniversary student conference.
6. John Hayes Appointed Claude E. Shannon Professor of Engineering Science
