1. Students Selected for NASA Project
Ten Aerospace Engineering students are traveling to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, to complete design work for the Mars Sample Return study. Michigan Engineers are the only college students participating in the weeklong project.

3. Recent Graduate Award Established
The Alumni Society has established the Recent Engineering Graduate Award to honor an alumnus/a who has contributed substantially to his/her field within the first ten years of graduating from the College of Engineering. For nomination forms, see http://www.engin.umich.edu/alumni/.

4. Dean Testifies Before Congress
Dean Stephen Director recently testified before the House Science Research Subcommittee about the need for increased funding for NSF research. The Dean explained that increasing the size and duration of grants would "enable researchers to concentrate more of their time on working with students and concentrate on research and discovery rather than paper work." 5. K-12 Outreach Committee Formed
Dean Director has appointed a faculty/staff committee, chaired by Ann Marie Sastry (ME), to review the College's K-12 outreach activities. The committee will make recommendations regarding program effectiveness and relevance to the College's mission. The group's report is due at the end of this summer.

6. Mourou (EECS) and Pollock (IOE) Elected to NAE
Gerard A. Mourou (EECS) and Stephen M. Pollock (IOE) were among 74 leading engineers and researchers elected to the National Academy of Engineering.Only 1,857 engineers in the United States currently hold this honor, and Mourou and Pollock are among the 16 honorees from the College of Engineering.

7. Stefanopoulou (ME) and Wineman (ME) Receive Honors
Anna Stefanopoulou (ME) has been chosen as one of nine outstanding engineering educators to receive the SAE's 2002 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award.

Alan Wineman (ME) has received the ASEE 2002 Archie Higdon Distinguished Educator Award.

8. Powell (AeroE) and Soloway (EECS) Named Thurnau Professors
The Regents have named Ken Powell (AeroE) and Elliot Soloway (EECS) as Arthur F. Thurnau Professors. Thurnau Professorships recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.

9. Pierre (ME) Appointed Collegiate Professor
Christophe Pierre (ME) has been appointed the Stephen P. Timoshenko Collegiate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Pierre is associate director of the Automotive Research Center. Timoshenko (1878-1972) was a U-M professor from 1927 to 1936, and is generally regarded as the father of Engineering Mechanics.

11. Mark Your Calendars
Save these dates! All Emeritus alumni are invited back to campus for Emeritus Weekend, May 31-June 1, 2002. The '52E, '47E and '42E classes will celebrate special anniversaries.
