Short Bio

Wei Shyy held the appointment as the Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson Collegiate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at The University of Michigan (UM) from January 2005 to July 2010. He has joined Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as Provost.

From 1988 to 2004, he was on the faculty of the University of Florida (UF), holding the rank of Associate Professor, Professor, and Distinguished Professor. He also served as department chair in UF between 1996 and 2004. From 1983 to 1988, he was a staff scientist at GE Corporate Research and Development Center in Schenectady, New York. He received a BS degree in 1977 from National Tsing-Hua University in Taiwan. He went to The University of Michigan in 1979, and received M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees, both in Aerospace Engineering, in 1981 and 1982, respectively. He is the author or a co-author of four books and numerous journal and conference articles dealing with computational and modeling techniques involving fluid flow, interfacial dynamics, multiphase and moving boundary problems, biological and low Reynolds number flight vehicles and aerodynamics, combustion and propulsion, fluid machinery, design optimization, materials processing, and biofluid dynamics.

He is General Editor of the Cambridge Aerospace Book Series published by the Cambridge University Press, Co-Editor-in Chief of Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering, a major reference work under development by Wiley-Blackwell. He also serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Acta Mechanica Sinica, Associate Editor of the ASME Applied Mechanics Reviews, and Communications in Computational Physics, as well as on the editorial boards of Progress in Aerospace Sciences, Numerical Heat Transfer (Part A: Applications, and Part B: Fundamentals), Progress in Computational Fluid Dynamics, International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat & Fluid Flow, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, Chinese Journal of Aeronautics, and Transactions of the Aeronautical and Astronautical Society of the Republic of China (Taiwan). He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has also received several awards for his research and professional contributions, including the AIAA 2003 Pendray Aerospace Literature Award, and the ASME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award, and The Engineers’ Council (Sherman Oaks, CA) 2009 Distinguished Educator Award. He is a guest professor of several universities in China and Japan. He has also served on a number of national and international committees to review the performance and productivity of research, funding agencies, and higher educational institutes.

In 2002, Shyy successfully led a group to establish the Institute for Future Space Transport, a seven-university consortium funded by NASA, under the University Research, Engineering and Technology Institutes program (now called the Constellation University Institutes Program, CUIP). The Institute received a 5-year, 15-million dollars support during the first phase. He continues to play very active role within the CUIP in its second phase. Since 2006, he is the principal investigator of the Michigan/AFRL/Boeing Collaborative Center in Aeronautical Sciences (MAB-CCAS), a five-year endeavor sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory. Since 2007, he is the principal investigator of a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) project, sponsored by DoD, on Biologically-Inspired, Anisotropic Flexible Wing for Optimal Flapping Flight.

His professional views have been quoted in a number of news media, including the New York Times, the Associated Press, the USA Today, the Christian Science Monitor, the Miami Herald, the St. Petersburg Times, the Orlando Sentinel, the Science Daily, the Yahoo-Live Science, the Austrian Public Radio, and the US News & World Report.
