FAQs

Do I have to take ENGR 100?
No, ENGR 100 is only for students admitted to engineering straight out of high school. If you are a cross campus transfer student then there are several LS&A writing courses that will have to be substituted in place of it. The majority of students take ENGLISH 124 or 125 but any one of the following classes can be taken:

AMCULT 101 or 170
CCLIV 101, 102, or 121Honors
HONORS 101
ENGLISH 124, 125, or 220
GTBOOKS 191
HISTORY 170 or 195
INSTHUM 104
LHSP 125
LING 104
RCCORE 100
SLAVIC 151
UC 153
WOMENSTD 210

What is the computing requirement?
ENGR 101 is the computing requirement for all cross campus transfer students. Some departments will accept EECS 183 in place of ENGR 101. They are both C++ programming. There are 3 spots reserved in all ENGR 101 classes for LS&A students. Wanda Dobberstein (wldobber@umich.edu) is the contact person for being able to register for this class. An LS&A student would have to contact her in order to receive an override. Students should plan on meeting with an engineering admission counselor prior to being able to receive an override for this course. ENGR 101 is currently only being taught during the Fall and Winter terms. Students will not be allowed into ENGR 101 more than two semesters away from their planned enrollment in engineering.

**EECS 100 is the class that used to be the requirement, thus if a student has completed this course from long ago it will be accepted in place of ENGR 101.

What if I took the Computer Science A or AB advanced placement exam and scored a 3 or higher?
Starting Fall 2001 students will receive credit for ENGR 101. Students who score a 4 or 5 on the exam may also receive credit fro EECS 280 and possibly higher.

Can I transfer to engineering if I have not completed all of the prerequisite classes?
Absolutely not!

Can I take PHY 125/127 and PHY 126/128 in place of PHY 140/141 and PHY 240/241?
No, you will be required to take the PHY 140/141 and PHY 240/241 sequences. Even if you have completed the PHY 125/127 and PHY 126/128 sequences before you apply, you will be required to take the PHY 140/141 and PHY 240/241 sequences.

Is it true that once I have over 55 credits Engineering will look for a higher GPA than it would have expected if I had LESS than 55 credits?
The important thing to remember here is that the College of Engineering wants students to transfer in by the beginning of their junior year at the latest. If you arrived at U-M Ann Arbor with some AP, IB, or "A" level credit, don't be alarmed; Engineering is most concerned with EARNED COLLEGE CREDIT; we will transfer in AP, IB, and A level credit, but the higher GPA expectation will be based on your EARNED COLLEGE CREDIT.

Is it true that even if I take one class at another institution and all of my remaining work is here in LS&A that I will be held to the Combined Cross Campus Transfer guidelines?
Not necessarily, engineering wants all cross campus students to take all of the their classes at UM but will often make exceptions if a student takes only one class away at another institution. This means that the student will still be considered under the cross campus guidelines. This does not mean that the GPA from that 1 class will be in any way used in the admissions decision.

Can I take engineering classes without being an engineering student?
Same response with the following addition:
Please keep in mind that if you take engineering classes and you are not admitted to the College of Engineering, that none of these classes will count towards an engineering degree.

Where do I get my academic advising?
If you are an LS&A student then you should continue to meet with your LS&A advisor and an engineering admissions counselor for advising. You do not meet with the Engineering Advising Center. You may need to meet with an actual engineering department but you would go by the recommendations from the engineering admissions counselor. This page will be the most helpful resource your selection of courses for registration. You will also need to get a copy of the most recent College of Engineering Bulletin to assist you in your course selection.

How do I apply to engineering?
You can either pick up a paper application in the Office of Engineering Recruitment and Admissions in the Lurie Engineering Center or LS&A Advising in Angell Hall. There is also an online application now available through the Engineering website.

What do I need turn in besides my application?
In most cases the application will be sufficient. There is no application fee. Your high school transcripts have already been sent to UM and we have access to them. The only other item we would need is official transcripts from all institutions for classes completed outside of UM. We only need these if the credit is not on your LS&A record or if you feel the credit should be transfer differently than the way LS&A transferred it.

Do I get credit for foreign language placement exams?
Yes, the College of Engineering will grant LS&A students up to 8 credits from the results of foreign language placement exams taken at UM. LS&A students need to bring us a copy of their placement results and credit is issued in the following manner:

5 semesters or higher proficiency: 8 credits granted of humanities on a case-by-case basis
4 semester proficiency: 8 credits of 200 level foreign language as humanities
3 semester proficiency: 4 credits of 200 level foreign language as humanities
4 credits of 100 level foreign language as unrestricted electives
2 semester proficiency: 8 credits of 100 level foreign language as unrestricted electives

What if the placement exam is taken in a subject that is my native language?
If you take an exam and score accordingly you will be give the credit regardless.

What if I have already received 8 credits of foreign language through AP, IB, or A-Level?
If this is the case then we cannot give you the credit, only 8 credits of foreign language can be added to a students record through examinations in the College of Engineering.

How do I find out about different majors?
Browse through our Engineering departments, starting with this web page: http://www.engin.umich.edu/departments. Or attend a program information session (January-February). These are advertised in flyers in the LSA Advising Center (1255 Angell) and also announced by LSA Academic Advisors through their e-mail groups. And finally, there's a one credit mini-course, Engin 195 - Special Topics, which is an introduction to the engineering profession

What about Biomedical Engineering?
Starting Fall 2001 Biomedical Engineering is being offered at the undergraduate level. It is now listed with all other engineering departments on the Transfer Admission Guidelines sheet.

What about Computer Science Engineering?
Starting Fall 2001 the College of Engineering is offering Computer Science Engineering. Electrical engineering will be focused on hardware, computer science engineering will be focused on software, and computer engineering will be a mix of both. For more detailed information regarding which of these three to apply for students should contact the EECS Department directly and schedule an appointment.

What is the difference between Computer Science in LS&A and Computer Science in Engineering?

  • Do you want a liberals arts degree or an engineering degree
  • LS&A degrees are 120 credits, Engineering are 128
  • LS&A degrees offer more opportunities to take HU and SS courses
  • Engineering degrees offer only 16 credits in HU and SS courses
  • The computer science types of classes will be the same and will contain students from both degree options
  • Engineering tuition is always a little higher than LS&A tuition
  • Students should contact the EECS Department directly for more specific curriculum differences

How are admissions decisions made?
The Office of Engineering Recruitment and Admissions makes all transfer admission decisions for students transferring into an engineering department. Students who meet the minimum GPA requirements and have completed all pre-requisite classes have a very good chance of admissions. Students who are just shy of the admission requirements may be granted an exception by the engineering department for admission. Students who clearly do not meet the admissions requirements will not be admitted with very few exceptions ever made.

When are admission decisions made?
Admission decisions are only made after all final grades for all pre-requisites have been received. Students are generally notified by e-mail at first. All admitted students will receive an official admission packet. This will either come through the mail or can be picked up by the student in person in our office. The time frame for official admission decisions is usually:

Spring/Summer Admits: Early May, usually a week after classes begin
Fall Admits: Mid May to late August, depending on when all pre-requisites are completed
Winter Admits: Early January, either just prior to or during the first week of classes

If I am just shy of the admission requirements what should I do?
Nothing, only an engineering admission counselor can ask for an exception to the admission guidelines on your behalf. The engineering department that you are applying to would be contacted directly about your situation and either an engineering program advisor or an engineering faculty committee would render a final admission decision. You will be contacted accordingly if any additional information is needed.

If I am denied admission can I reapply for a future term?
Yes, many LS&A students re-apply to engineering for a future term. All you need to do is send us something in writing (e-mail is preferred) that states you would like to officially have your application updated to the new term. Once you have completed additional classes they will be taken into account with your existing record. Students who are denied and have completed all pre-requisite classes may want to make an appointment with an engineering department program advisor to further discuss your application. Continuing to take classes towards an engineering degree, once denied, may not be in your best interests.

If I am fairly certain that I will be admitted to engineering but need to register for future courses that are mostly engineering classes, what do I do?
You will begin by meeting with the appropriate engineering admission counselor or engineering department advisor for course selection. Once the classes are determined you will simply register for all of them in LS&A the exact same way as you have always registered. All LS&A students that are admitted to engineering will be given instructions in their admission packets on how to change your future registered classes over from LS&A to Engineering. This process can only occur after a student if officially admitted on M-Pathways to engineering. We also go over this process in the engineering cross campus orientation. Students do not lose any classes in this process it is simply a matter of switching them from LS&A to Engineering.

Do I have to choose a department when applying for admission?
Yes, you must choose one engineering department only. The students who are admitted to engineering straight out of high school can be undecided until they declare to an engineering department. However, all transfer students to engineering must be admitted directly to an engineering department.

What if I change my mind any point after I am admitted or I enroll in engineering?
You can change engineering departments once you are admitted if both engineering departments approve this. You would need to meet with the new engineering department and see if you can be admitted. If this is approved and you notify your current engineering department to fill out the appropriate levels of paperwork then you would be allowed to change engineering departments.

Does credit transfer with a C grade?
Credit from institutions outside of UM transfers with a C or better; any class with a C- or below will not transfer. Credit from LS&A also needs to be at a C or better. Credit will be posted on your UM record if you receive a D+ or C- but will most likely not count towards your engineering degree and have to be repeated. Individual engineering departments will need to be contacted for specific rulings on a case-by-case basis.

What about orientation?
Cross Campus Transfer Orientation always takes place during the first or second week of classes of the term you are admitted for. The specific details will be listed in your admission packet.

Is it possible for me to graduate with a degree from both LS&A and Engineering?
Yes, if this is the case and you just want to add Engineering on to your current LS&A degree then you will not go through the transfer admissions process that has been previously described. You will need to come up to the Student Services Office in Engineering to receive a form to take to the specific engineering department of interest. They will then review you case from start to finish and let you know if you can add engineering on to your current degree?

What about engineering minors?
Starting Fall 2001 Engineering will be offering LS&A minors to engineering students. The same curriculum requirements that LS&A uses for minors will also be used for engineering. These are the only minors that are being offered at this time. A student will not be able to get a minor in engineering or any department of engineering.
