External Transfer Students

This information is for students who are not enrolled in a unit of the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus and who seek admission with advanced standing. If you have attended another college or university in the United States, please check our database of course equivalencies to determine the specific courses that should be taken to satisfy the U-M's prerequisite courses.

Guidelines for External Transfer Students

Each of the College's 15 degree programs require prerequisites and a minimum GPA for transfer admission. Each program requires two minimum GPA required for transfer admission. (1) cumulative GPA and (2) cumulative math, science and engineering core GPA. GPA is only calculated on courses that are transferable to the College of Engineering. The minimum GPA and prerequisite requirements are mandatory for engineering transfer admission but are subject to change and do not guarantee admission.

Application Deadlines:

March 1st for fall term. Extended to March 28th for Fall 2008 term only
October 1st for winter term

Prerequisites:

Students seeking admission to a degree program must complete, at minimum, the following prerequisites. (Grades in math, chemistry and physics should be at least "B" level.)

  • Math: Two years of math including: Calculus I, II and III; Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
  • Physics: One year of physics (calculus-based) with labs
  • Chemistry: One semester of general chemistry and the lab (Chemical Engineering does not require this lab but does require two additional courses of organic chemistry plus labs; Biomedical Engineering does not require this lab but does require one additional course of organic chemistry plus lab.)
  • Computing: One semester of computer programming in "C++" or programming language preference by department.
  • English: A minimum of four (4) credits of English Composition.
  • Please Note: Sixteen (16) credits of Humanities and Social Sciences are required for graduation, of which six (6) must be humanities. All 16 credits of humanities and social science need not be completed prior to transfer.
