FAQs

Does the College of Engineering admit its own transfer students?
Yes! The College of Engineering is responsible for all aspects of its transfer admissions process. The Office of Recruitment and Admissions makes available to prospective students online applications, processes these applications, admits qualified applicants and provides information to all prospective transfer students.

How do I apply to the College of Engineering as a transfer student?
The first step would be to obtain a transfer application. Once you receive the application, read it carefully and complete it accurately. Submit the completed application with the appropriate application fee. To prevent delays in processing, be sure that all requested official transcripts and credentials are sent to the Engineering Office of Recruitment and Admissions not the Undergraduate Admissions Office:

What constitutes a complete application?
Accurate and up-to-date information (please notify us of any changes to this information); the required application fee; high school transcripts and any advanced placement test scores; and all official college transcripts. Please note: International students must also include a completed Financial Resource Statement, Guarantee of Financial Backing form, current bank statement verifying funds; syllabi for courses taken outside of the US; and TOEFL or MELAB exam results and a copy of the I-20 if applicable.

What is a prerequisite?
A prerequisite is a required course that must be completed prior to a student's enrollment in the College of Engineering. Such courses are required because the successful completion of specific courses in your engineering curriculum at U-M will assume prior knowledge of the prerequisites course material.

After I've submitted all application materials, when can I expect to hear whether or not I've been admitted?
You will be sent verification that your application has been received within three weeks after we receive it. In a minimum of six to eight weeks you should receive a letter from your admissions counselor notifying you of an admission decision. Admission counselors prioritize review of applications based on the upcoming term. Please note: It may take longer for students whose mailing addresses are outside the US to receive their verifications, letters and other communications.

Do I have to choose a department when applying for transfer admission? Or can I change after I'm admitted?
