AP and IB Credit

Details on all of these subject areas can be found in the credit grid below. Answers to frequently-asked questions on AP credit can also be found below.

Michigan Engineering's policy regarding IB credits is the same as the International Baccalaureate Guidelines published by the UM Admissions office.

English
Advanced Placement English credit is assessed as English departmental credit and can be used toward your free electives or humanities requirement. AP English composition credit will not fulfill the Engineering 100 requirement.
Computing
Computing Advanced credit will be given to those who have a satisfactory score on the AP examination.
Math
Math credit will be given to those who have a satisfactory score on the AP examination or who have transfer credit from another college or institution. These students will select the next course in the math sequence.
Physics
Advanced credit will be given to those who have a satisfactory score on the AP examination.
Foreign Language
Credit may be received for foreign languages by getting a satisfactory score on the AP examination.

Note: You will lose the AP, A-Level or transfer credit if you select an equivalent course. In other words,you cannot get credit for the same course twice.

Frequently asked questions about AP credits:

Q I took an AP English and Composition exam in high school. Can this fulfill my English writing requirement?
A No, the College of Engineering does not have an English writing requirement. However, the first engineering course, Introduction to Engineering, does have a writing component.

Q Is a foreign language required for a degree in Engineering?
A The College of Engineering does not require a foreign language, though knowledge of a second language is encouraged.

Q I took the AP Computer Science A or AB exam. Does this fulfill the requirement for computing in the College of Engineering?
A Yes, with the score of 4 or above you will get four - eight credits. This will fulfill the ENGR 101 or computing requirement based on the Engineering Department that you are declaring into.
