Dean's Home
Hello, I'm Dave Munson, the Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering here at the University of Michigan College of Engineering. No matter your reason for exploring these pages, I can assure you, if you're interested in opportunities, you've come to the right place. Here at Michigan Engineering, you'll find 11 renowned academic departments, dozens of research centers and labs, some 60 student societies, and a dozen nationally and internationally competitive student project teams (including the only five-time solar car national champion). Michigan Engineering has something for everyone: students, faculty, companies and friends. As an engineer with many non-engineering interests, I'm particularly interested in the many connections found here. For example, the University's Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute encompasses research done at Michigan Engineering, in the School of Natural Resources and Environment and in five other units. The Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute, based at the College, promotes research in fuel cells, hybrid engines, nuclear engineering, solid state lighting and many other areas. Numerous interdisciplinary research programs involve faculty from Michigan Engineering and the also-highly rated U-M medical and business schools. Michigan is one of only two schools in the U.S. with highly ranked engineering, medical and business schools.
On the lighter side, Michigan Engineering students seek enrichment from a variety of pursuits. Each year engineers represent roughly one third of the Michigan Marching Band, and last summer an incoming Engineering transfer student won gold and silver medals at the Paralympics in Beijing. Opportunities abound to volunteer both on campus and in the community.
I look forward to expanding possibilities for faculty and students who want to explore beyond traditional boundaries. Much groundwork already is in place - the College's $300 million Progress & Promise: 150th Anniversary Campaign has provided new resources for scholarships, professorships and facilities. These resources - and other initiatives to come - will enhance our ability to investigate our world in innovative ways. The Center for Entrepreneurship sponsors various new-venture competitions, and MPowered, the student entrepreneurship group, has a membership of 900.
As we expand the scope of educational opportunities, capacity for scholarship and scale of endeavor that represent the essence of Michigan Engineering, I invite you to stay in touch. Look around our website to learn more about all the great things that are happening here. Better still, come visit our campus. We welcome your interest.
