There is no paved sidewalk from the computer science building to the other end of the diag (Pierpont Commons). Could one be built (and maintained during the snowy winter)?

From Resource Planning and Management: This sidewalk is in the works. The University Planner's office approved our request for a sidewalk last spring. They originally had promised us the sidewalk would be in place before classes started in the fall of 07. Due to a variety of issues the sidewalk did not get installed. They are now promising that the walk will be installed early in the summer of 08.

The CAEN Printing Environment [needs improving]. Most of the CAEN printers do NOT operate properly. For example the one in CSE lab, near the Foo Bar is always out of order. Also, color printing quota has been removed. This is a [concern] because almost all of engineering has to print plots/graphs in color. Reducing printing quota of ITCS printers was [inconvenient]because almost everyone works in Duderstadt. Almost 98% of Duderstadt population is engineers so CAEN should install some printers there.

From CAEN: With the increasing demand of printers, duty cycles are being stretched and unfortunately there is usually not a lot of extra printing capacity available elsewhere when printers are down. We have staff that go to the labs everyday to stock paper and check on the printers, but this isn't an effective way to manage printer problems. Thanks for your observation as this is a valid concern. We are going to take a serious look at remote monitoring for these printers. Once we are successful at integrating this into our remote monitoring framework, we would be able to dispatch staff immediately when a problem is noticed.

Color Printing is expensive and CAEN has limited funds to support printing. We have discussed printer issues at several student venues including UMEC meetings and CAEN Student Advisory Group meetings. With that, we feel that we have made reasonable decisions between B/W and color. We appreciate your input and it is important to us, however we need to make sure we are representing a common sentiment amongst all students. We will take it as an action item to raise this issue with the Student Affairs division of the College and see if they will aggregate input on printing from students.

As for your comments concerning the Duderstadt Center, keep in mind that it is a campus-wide facility and technically it is not a CAEN lab. ITCS provides the printing in all campus-wide facilities. Your issues about ITCS printing costs are widely shared, however they are beyond our control to affect. You are paying for the convenience of using ITCS printers when you print in the Duderstadt Center. Remember that you always have the option of printing to a printer in a CAEN lab.

11/28/06 Construct a bus shelter for the northbound bus stop by Pierpont Commons From the Transportation Director: We are currently putting together a comprehensive list of potential bus stops that should have shelters. This particular stop is on our list. There are so many stops on our list that I envision this 'bus shelter enhancement' project will be implemented over several years. The order in which we add shelters will depend primarily on the average number of daily boardings. Other considerations are safety, proximity to buildings and frequency of service. The way it looks right now, this stop would not be near the top of our list - there are more pressing needs elsewhere.
9/13/06 Update the BME website to show current news and activities. From BME chair: they are in the process of hiring a webmaster to take care of this problem.
8/30/06 Place trees along the long diagonal sidewalk on the North Diag and remove trees that are not adjacent to the sidewalk next to the EECS building. This recommendation has been forwarded to Resource Planning and Management. If the students wants to provide rationale behind the suggestion, they will look more closely at it.
8/30/06 Attach a meter to The Cube on Central Campus to determine how much electricity is generated by it. This recommendation was forwarded to University Plant Operations.
1/31/06 Is there a plan to replace the sand volleyball courts that were on the north campus diag? From Resource Planning and Management:
The volleyball courts will not be available this summer and may not ever come back. Their location was taken up by the Walgreen Drama Center. We currently do not have plans to replace them.
11/2/05 Southwest entrance to EWRE is key access only, and is sometimes locked. Would it be possible to get an MCard reader installed on this door? From Resource Planning and Management:
No doors should be locked during any weekday to any of our buildings. If a student finds a locked door they should call 72059 to report it. If funding allows, a card access system will be added to another CoE building during the summer of 2006. We are just finishing the 2005 installation in FXB. EWRE is on a list, with a few other buildings, as a candidate for the next installation.
10/14/05 The path from the back entrance of the EECS building to Beal Ave. has no light.

From Resource Planning and Management:
Lighting has now been installed.

7/13/05 More social activities for CoE graduate students.

From Coordinator of Graduate Student Activities: ADGE provides the following social events: picnic, football party, hockey game, and bowling challenge. New ideas for events are always welcome!

6/9/05 Establish a balance of restrooms for women and men in the DOW building.

From Resource Planning and Management:
Sept 1 a new Women's room will open on the 1st floor to replace the one that was closed.

6/1/05 The recent construction on North Campus was not well publicized. From Resource Planning and Management:
Andria Rose will be notified of any updates, and she will send emails to the students.
5/28/05 For CEE department: Guidance sought as to how PhD students can follow their graduation plans after completing the preliminary proposal, when their goals differ from their advisors'.
From CEE Department Chair:
Option 1: Call for a data meeting of the entire thesis committee to present your progress so far and discuss the time for defense.
Option 2: Make an appointment with either the department or the graduate chair to resolve it in the best possible way.
5/27/05 For EECS graduate program: M.S. students lose out on industry opportunities after the program, due the lack of flexibility that the program offers.

From EECS Department Chair:
Whereas most of our M.S. students in EECS seem well served by our current curricula, I do agree that there is an increasing need for M.S. students to be exposed to planning and leadership of engineering programs and operations. In fact, this part of engineering is harder to out-source. EECS is undertaking a strategic planning effort during Fall 2005. As one thread of this planning, we will be examining our graduate programs. Part of that conversation will be focused on the content of the M.S. programs, with the thought that some changes are likely needed. We appreciate the suggestion made by this anonymous student.
